Hanoi Cafe: Excellent vietnamese restaurant
The London borough of Hackney (to the Northeast of the City) has a large Vietnamese population and, consequently, a large number of Vietnamese restaurants. These seem to be of a uniformly good standard and vary essentially only in decor and price. Of these, I can certainly recommend the Hanoi Cafe.
This particular restaurant is not much to look at from outside, but the interior is nicely done in white wood panelling with some pleasant black and white photos famed on the walls. Service is good and friendly and the food is very good.
The menu is extensive, featuring all the well-known Vietnamese dishes.
The lunchtime deal, a choice of 10 veggie and 10 non-veggie meals, each@ £3:80 is very good value.
Vietnamese beer is available (along with various other Asian beers) @ £2:30 a bottle.
If you are visiting the Geffrye Museum (see seperate tip) this place is about three minutes walk away.
Favorite Dish: Chicken with lemongrass and chiilies with steamed rice. Thin pieces of chicken with peppers and onions served in a lemongrass and chilli sauce, although the chilli is not overpowering. Very nice.
