Kensington Place Restaurant & Bar: Notting Hill Gem

Kensington Place Restaurant & Bar is located in Notting Hill, West London. We had a great lunch here one Sunday with friend and VT'er Sarah (londonbabe) and her boyfriend Steve. Being a favourite haunt of Sarah's, we knew we were in for a treat, as she has great taste in restaurants!

The restaurant has a relaxed feel, and was filled with families enjoying a Sunday lunch. Service was friendly but professional and the food was delicious.

Favorite Dish: Alex had an amazing starter of Foie Gras on sweetcorn pancakes, that literally melted in your mouth. Main courses we had a delicious Roast Lamb with spinach and Steve had Roast Partridge. Alex chose the best dessert too...a bitter Chocolate Mousse served with Coffee ice cream.....yum....I had Lemon Tart which was also pretty good.

A couple of bottles of wine with the meal and coffee to finish rounded off a very enjoyable way to spend a cool Autumn Sunday afternoon. Thanks Sarah!

Kensington Place: V. good food, v.good wine list, V. Good

Kensington Place opened at the end of the Eighties and immediately captured the buzz of London at the time. A huge open space with wall-to-ceiling glass windows, it was one of the first 'see and be seen' places. Now 15 years on it's still a great place to eat.
It's also MUCH better value than it used to be, with a set dinner menu giving 3 substantial courses for £24, or £39 if you have the 3 large glasses of matched wine. There are some lovely dishes on the a la carte menu as well, but we went for the set menu.
Fresh crab mayonnaise on toast, paired with an excellent Marlborough sauvignon, was ample and very tasty. Steve then had a very large chunk of skate tail, with potato, spinach and some oven roasted tomatoes. Wine was a rather strange Pinot Bianca, but which went well with the mustard crust on the skate. I had a huge piece of kid a la cacciatore, with roast potatoes and a pea and lettuce salad. Plus an excellent glass of Chianti.
Steve then had cheese - a good selection of five pieces - small but rich, like some of the other customers - and could have as many biscuits as he wanted from a large selection. With a glass of Crozes Hermitage.
I had the raspberry pavlova, which they brought with a glass of red. When I said this was rather strange, the charming waiter and waitress both agreed, and brought me the dessert wine list so I could choose something else. A Baume de Venise went perfectly with the sweet meringue and raspberries.
    Total including a bottle of mineral water and a well-deserved 12% service - £92.
Only let down is the toilets. The Kenneth Turner handwash is very nice but the toilet cubicles are a bit faded and the handbasin looks like a urinal.

We stopped in Kensington Palace and had coffee and cake. It was busy inside and out - staff were good, but the queues were poorly managed.
