Pie, mash and eels: Pie and mash heaven.......

  • I read about this cafe on here and can only say VISIT it, go on you know you must. Double pie, mash and liquer for under 3 quid makes this not only a fantastic meal it also makes it a cheap meal too (somewhat unusual in London).
The decor is functional and unassuming, you get the feeling that what you see is what you get. The place is constantly busy with locals (always a good sign) and tourists alike eating here. The tables are long tables and the seats benches, so you could be sharing your table with others and this adds to the attraction of the place. The smell as you walk in is great and the food perfect.
If you have enough room to fit in desert i would recommend the apple pie and ice cream, the pie tastes like something your gran would make (assuming shes a good cook) and the ice cream is to die for, and at 1.40 gbp a bargain too..........
For 7.00gbp we both ate heartly and I was seriously torn between raving about the place or keeping it quiet in case it gets too busy.
One thing that should be stressed is that unless you fancy a hike through Greenwich you should get off the DLR at the Cutty Sark as this is only a moments walk from Goddards.
WELL WORTH THE TREK ACROSS LONDON.

Double pie and mash with gravy for the larger appetite, with apple pie and ice cream or custard washed down with a cuppa......

Pie, mash and eels: Best steak and 'stack' of chips around!
  • Tip Rating:

  • The Red Lion is an upmarket pub that serves good quality (albeit expensive) food, in a nice atmosphere. We always try and grab the leather couches to relax on :)

The best part of this pub is their outdoor area we think. In summer they have BBQs, theres plenty f area for the kids to play on very nicely laid grass... and the tables are large and can sit 8, easily.

I like their Prawn cocktail - very good, plus their steak, salad and fries is lovely - a nice cut of beef plus the fries are homemade, chunky and 'stacked'.

    Very yummy.

Their Chicken & Leek pie is a classic too! Their burgers are also very tasty.

The beer (my favourite being beer shandy) is good & the staff are friendly & attentive... we will always go back for more.

Pie, mash and eels: Lass O Richmond Hill - our favourite London pub!

  • We have been to this pub quite a few times, tried practically everything on the menu, and love it. It is an upmarket pub.

The ambiance, service, no sleazy characters, not too smokey, and good food.

    Who could want for more?

As it has that special something, we have had a couple of special occasions here, namely New Yaers and Christmas meals with family and friends.

I can heartily recommend the lamb shank and the steak and ale pie. Other meals looks great too (we have only had one complaint from a friend who went there, saying her steak and ale pie didnt have much steak in it).

Desserts are varied and flavoursome, I especially enjoy their chocolate mousse.

Their menu changes all the time with different specials (written on a chalk board), and we love their variety.

  • AussieMadCow, Jessica-b, BarbaraForza, sue_stone, Mariajoy and moi, Jenniflower, met up at Hamptons Wine Bar for a ladies night out on Friday, 22nd April 2005... never having been to a VT meeting before I was understandbly nervous, and when I met everyone.. this turned to absolute TERROR!

This bar is close to where I work, down a little side alley, it has a row of windows down the one side which is really nice in summer because they are all open, so the smoke is not so bad.

The evening we were there though the windows were closed and the smoke wasnt that bad anyway.

A splendid venue. Quaint, intimate, and not overcrowded or too smokey. We didnt eat here, we only had a couple of drinks.

We went off to Strada afterwards for a meal. It was a lovely venue to meet up and have a pint or a glass of wine though! :)

  • Previously known as Hogheads, this pub has undergone a few management changes it seems.

Decor is good (there's a lovely sunlight in the one section, and leather lounge suites to lounge about on) and there is a non smoking section - yippee yay!

To find that in a pub is a joy. Couches were comfy, and ambiance was good.

We have watched a rugby game here, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. We sat on a couch and didnt feel like we were all squashed in to view the game.

Lighting was good as was the overall ambiance.

The food we did have was nice (we only had handcut hot chips), beer good and service fine and polite.

Pie, mash and eels: Opening hours
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Pubs traditionally open from 11am to 3pm and then from again 5pm to 11pm, however, with the new 24 hour drinking laws having come into effect, they are open for longer, it is up to the discretion of the pub owner.

We enjoy going to the pub now and again, but dont view it as part of our lifestyle, as Brits seem to do. We enjoy spending more time with friends at our homes than in pubs. Different cultures I guess. Many pubs are also very smokey, which we dislike, plus, with me being asthmatic, it is quite dangerous for me. We look forward to the new smoking laws in England :)

The photos are of our favourite pub in Richmond, the Lass O Richmond Hill.

A 3 minute cab ride from Gatwick...Traditional pub food.

Well...had I an appetite I would have tried the ale and steak pie..instead I settled for a bowl of corriander and carrot soup..washed down with a nice ale.

Pie, mash and eels: A popular pie shop in Greenwich
  • Tip Rating:
  • Goddard's traditional pie and mash shop in Greenwich has adapted to a more cosmopolitan world by offering a wider range of pies than is traditional, with alien side orders like baked beans. But it still does the real thing as well (the liquor was a bit thin for my liking but that's a small point). Judging by the queues on a Saturday evening it remains extremely popular with the locals.

Unusually for London's pie shops, it's licensed, though a cup of tea is still best!

Double pie, double mash and liquor, with a cup of tea to wash it down.

For a long time, the “Pie and Mash” – culture has almost disappeared in London. Today, you can’t find any of these shops in the areas usually frequented by tourists. However, Pie and Mash as remained strong in the east and in some areas of the south. And it’s coming back!

So what would be a better place for a Pie and Mash – experience than Manze’s at Tower Bridge Road. This shop calls itself the “Home of Pie and Mash” and is the oldest surviving Pie and Mash – shop in London (established in 1902). An evidence of its popularity can be the long queue in front of the shop.
The menu is simple: 1 Pie 1 Mash or 1 Pie 2 Mash or 2 Pie 1 Mash or 2 Pie 2 Mash (further combinations are available upon reqeust…). Few other dishes are served, for example jellied eels, which is another cockney classic.

I had 1 Pie 1 Mash in classic version: Minced beef pie, mashed potatoes (the real stuff, not the instant version!) and a green pearsley sauce called liquor (but it has nothing to do with alcohol). It didn’t taste bad at all and added a further experience to my life.

Pie, mash and eels: Pie and mash - London's own speciality
  • Tip Rating:
  • Never mind the sort of junk food you get the world over, pie and mash with parsley liquor is London's very own soul food. It pre-dates fish 'n' chips and although you won't find pie and mash sold in the main tourist areas, it still hangs on in pockets around the fringes and still attracts a loyal following from some surprising people.

The pie will be best beef, the pastry is delicious, the potatoes mashed to perfection and the parsley liquor much nicer than it looks (it's bright green!).

Traditionally, eels are served as well, stewed or jellied. Personally I can take or leave the eels - it's worth bearing in mind that the eel became a London speciality in the days when the Thames was so filthy only eels could live in it!
