Viaduct Tavern: It's haunted by poltergeist named Fred!

This is one of the "prettiest" yet "authentic" pubs I've been to in London. It's right on Newgate Street, literally across the Street from the Old Bailey courthouse, which you should check out as well!

It's a "Victorian era" pub, designed after a very flamboyant Victorian opera house. It has the coolest ceiling which I enjoy staring at after a good (1/2!) pint and really gorgeous paintings of these three women on the glass walls. The woman in the middle has a small hole towards the bottom when it was accidently shot at during a bit of a drunken riot back in...some long ago century...(!)

If you go downstairs to the loo (erm...bathroom) you'll find the cutest little bathrooms ever! (well, at least the women's room) There's a rumor that the pub is haunted by a prostitute who was murdered in the bathroom. The pub is also haunted by a poltergeist named Fred who sometimes misplaces stock down in the cellar.

If you happen to befriend one of the (really, really cool!) bartenders, ask if you can check out the cellar of the pub, which is full of twisting, turning caverns and was once the holding jail cell for debtors who couldn't be held at the Old Bailey (which typically held murderers, rapists, frauds, etc).

There's one bartender/cook who is always there almost every day who wear his hair back in a long, curly ponytail. Ask him if you can check the cellar and he'll take you down. He's also the coolest bartender in the world. Seriously. :-P

Also, a lot of judges from the Old Bailey courthouse (highest court in London, tries mostly murders, rapes, fraud and "high profile" cases. Anyway, the Viaduct Tavern gets a lot of judges. You'll notice they drink Guinness, which, if you already know, are black beers with a white cap. Annnd...Judges in London wear black robes and wear white wigs! Who woulda thunk! :-D

Favorite Dish: The chili and chips are quite good. And the ale and cider are quality.
