I jumped on a number 9 Heritage Routemaster Bus in Piccadilly and jumped off again just across the roads from Harrods. I wasn't really planning on going in but I thought I might just take a look at their luggage dept as I needed a new rucksack and haven't been inside since ohhhhh... somewhere in the late 70's.

Well... the nightmare shopping trip from hell began the moment I walked in the door. It was too hot, too noisy, too crowded, too tacky, too expensive and probably one of the worst shopping moments I have experienced in a long time. There is NOTHING classy about this place - it is gaudy, and sells garish overpriced crap. A scrunchy (a type of hairband) can set you back ?195!!!!!! It bears more resemblance to a theme park than a department store.

And as for the Dodi and Diana Shrine - well.... it would be touching if it wasn't so laughable. I couldn't even bring myself to waste good film on it, unlike the throngs of tourists for whom a visit here was some kind of pilgrimage.

With most of my tips I would include a website - but I won't bother with this one.

Don't bother buying anything here. Go to Harvey Nicks along the street.

    More than you earn probably.

    Hamleys: A World of Toys
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is one of the biggest toy stores I have ever seen. It is 7 floors of nothing but toys - tens of thousands of them of all kinds - dolls, stuffed animals, vehicles, crafts, computer games with, of course, the ever present Barbies shown in the photo. We did a one stop trip here for souvenirs for our 4 grandchildren. Our six year-old granddaughter has dozens if not hundreds of stuffed animals and when I asked her what she wanted from London she said, "I don't have a panda bear and really, really want one." Her mother pointed out that pandas were really from China, a long way from London. When I asked again later she said, "If you are near Japan, I would like a panda bear." Hamleys had wonderful pandas!

TOYS, TOYS, TOYS. If you have children with you, this will be an unforgettable place for them to visit. They can even pick out a "bear skin" and watch it being stuffed - a made to order teddy bear!

From the sublime to the ridiculous.

    Harrods: Something For Everyone
  • Tip Rating:
  • Harrods is touted as Londons most famous shop and something I have wanted to see for many years! As much as I have read of this place I was still suprised at the sheer size of it! There are over 300 department within its walls. You can buy almost anything here. We only spent a few hours exploring so we did not see it all. The food halls are amazing and we did indulge in some yummy cheescake while wondering through. There is a memorial to Princess Di and her friend (his father owns Harrods) It is rather strange but I have included a picture. The Egyptian room is awe inspireing.
Harrods was originally founded by a tea merchant Henry Charles Harrod in 1849 and at one point you could purchase large animals such as an elephant or a giraffe in the pet store. Now you can only find your usual domestic animals there.

I only bought a few small greeting cards and some cheesecake. Harrods is more of a must see then anything else.

Harrods is not a budget shop so do not expect to find any true bargains. Things seemed to be a bit pricey but some of the cards and food was reasonably priced.

    Markets: Camden Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • The first part of the Camden shopping area we hit was Camden Market, it's just a small part of the Camden shopping area so don't go here and then leave after seeing this part of the market.

The attached website has a listing of all of the various shopping areas and their opening times. It appears that most everything is open every day although I imagine it is busier on the weekends and especially on Sundays it seems as there was a special tube notice about how you could get off at Camden Town on Sundays but not back on (or was it vice versa?)

Jewellery and luxury goods: Smell as nice as Prince Charles' armpits...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Penhalligans is probably the most respected perfumiers in the world. You can find branches and concessions in such places as Rodeo drive in Beverly hill and in most of the Saks stores in the US.

There are several London Branches, mainly as concessions in the big department store, but also as stand-alone shops in the Burlington Arcade and in Wellington Street, just off Covent Garden to name a couple.

I actually quite like the relaxed atmosphere in the Covent Garden branch, and was also interested to see that they put the framed Royal warrant from the Prince of Wales on the inside wall of the shop.

Nice place, but I'll think I'll stick to to a good scrub behind the ears with carbolic soap twice a week to keep me shipshape, call be old fashioned, but I can't be doing with all this poncy male grooming - it can make you fancy women called 'Camilla'.

It's all branded with 'Penhaligon's' on it,

Antiquarians' shops are certainly full of beautiful things, but prices are not exactly for everybody, so, if you like things from time past, why not to buy nice imitations?
This shop is perfect for those who want to buy a present for somebody but have no ideas. Here it is easy to find something nice and unusual.
I always loved these shops, so it was very sad for me to find out that the ones in central London are not there any more. When in London it is necessary to go all the way to Uxbridge to find one!

Celtic or Elizabethan jewels, cushions and throws copied from medieval tapestries, perfume bottles, Victorian nightdresses, candlesticks in various styles, model trains and many other things.

The price range is wide, from GBP 4.00 (a Victorian tea-caddy) to 400.00 (a grandfather clock) but the majority of items are priced between 10 and 30 GBP.

Hays Gallery: Shopping near London Bridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a collection of shops under one roof. There are coffee shops, postcard/souvenir shops and art gallery shops. There are also stalls outside selling *ethnic* style jumpers and hats etc.

There are better places to shop in London but this is ok just to hang out for a little while after a long walk along the South Bank. The London Dungeon is just across the road so you could combine this place with a visit there.

There's a huge metal sculpture in the middle of the floor - I think it's a ship but I guess that's open to interpretation.

    It's quite expensive.

Strutt & Parker: Titles for sale
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ever dreamed of being an aristocrat? And did you ever imagine that a title could be bought at an auction?
Such auctions are not very frequent, but neither unfrequent.
Strutt & Parker have been doing them for 50 years, so they are the ones to contact if you are interested.

Several feudal tenures were auctioned recently, but not all of them were sold, so some are still on the market. Most of them are Lord of the Manor titles, but there are also baronies available. Some have also special privileges attached, for instance the right to wreck on a certain stretch of sea coast.

The Barony of Hastings was sold for more than 90,000 GBP in 1996, but recently the title of Lord of Haseldon (Sussex) was sold for as little as 9,000 GBP.

Borough Market is a lively food market open on Fridays (12pm-6pm) and Saturdays (9am-4pm).

It's a perfect place to get both fresh fish and potatoes for your homemade fish and chips :)

And you can also buy every other kind of fresh produce there.

Fresh or smoked salmon, cheese, etc...but make sure to walk around and check everything! :)

Burlington Arcade: Luxury Shopping In London

    Burlington Arcade

The elegant and peaceful Burlington Arcade on Piccadilly was first opened to shoppers in 1819 by Lord Cavendish to sell luxury goods to "fashionable ladies and dandies of the day". He employed Beadles to ensure shoppers did not get over excited and shopped in a civilised and calm manner. Beadles are still employed here for this very purpose! A nice place to escape the madness of the surrounding area - even if you can't afford to buy anything here!

Cashmere, silver, antiques, jewellery, shoes and leather goods, perfume etc etc.

    Waaaaayyyy too much!
