Covent Garden was designed as a piazza in the 1600's and some of the area street names are still the same as then. St. Paul's church is on one side of the square and it used to be surrounded by Inigo Jones designed houses. Little by little Covent Garden became a market square and then a flower market and slowly the merchants expanded into the surrounding streets. In the mid 1960's, the old market was cleared out and redeveloped for tourism. There are still market stalls amid all the shops and restaurants and the old theatre is now the Royal Opera House.
Covent Garden has some very interesting shops in the main piazza structure. There are seconds china shops, a theatre and toy store, Past Times, boutiques and the market stalls as well. You will see street performers and at night, there are streams of people filing into the area to take part in the bars and restaurants before and after the theatre. Leave a Comment

Months ago I had received a gift from a friend who had recently returned from Hong Kong. The gift was an exquisite silk robe from the SHANGHAI TANG shop there. It was the finest quality of silk I had ever felt up against the skin. After doing much research on the shop, I found out they had various locations outside of Hong Kong. One of them being London. When you enter the shop on Sloane St., you are whisked away to another time and city. The London boutique opened in April 2002 and has something for everyone.....men, women, and children. There is a definite oriental mystique in the shop. Shanghai Tang is known for its esoteric products and distinctive packaging. They blend traditional Chinese culture with the styles of the 21st Century – a vibrant fusion of ‘East Meets West.’ How appropriate! ;-)

The dusty Sydenham Road makes an unlikely setting for a shop specialising in belly dancing clothes and accessories. Lovely jewelled costumes ... Finger cymbals... Jewels designed to fit every part of the body ... Lamps Music Old black and white pictures of Cairo dancers in days gone by. The owner also has a wonderful book with pictures of accommodation in a village by Luxor, available to rent at low prices. She owns one of the properties, and knows of others.

Southampton street has become a cluster for shops selling adventure / climbing / sporting equipment. I think it began with the YHA adventure shop, but now North Face, Mountain Warehouse and other such shops have taken premises nearby. There are also a number of nearby travel companies that specialise in making arrangments for the backpacker / adventure type of tourist. Waterstones are a large "chain" of book shops throughout the UK. This one is in Bloomsbury. You can get coffee and cakes upstairs - great place to escape the chilly London winter for an hour or so and read a good book!

I think everyone thinks that one cannot come to London wwithout visiting Harrods. And it is this thinking that helps Harrods remain at the forefront of London (and world) retail today. It's the largest store in London, with about 4.5 acres of floor space and 1m (million) sq ft of selling space on the floor. I go past it every day on the bus, twice. This High Street is a busy high street anyway, but outside Harrods it is often pure mayhem. Far too many people trying to get through its doors! There is a shrine dedicated to Lady Diana and Dodi on the lower floor of the store. There are pictures of them and reportedly the two wine glasses they drank from that night, on display too. I am a great fan of Diana, but find this tacky beyond belief, and this is one of the reasons Harrods leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. They used to charge people £1 to make use of their lavatory, but do not do this anymore. Is there a dress code? Well, in 1996, when my husband first went in there, he thought there wasnt. He was wearing shorts and trainers. He was a young man and didnt think to dress up to go shopping. A burly guard tapped him on the shoulder when he went through the doors and gently escorted him out! I have gone a few times (yes, with hubby too), and we have gone quite casually, and never been stopped. Whether the guard was having a particularly bad day that day, or the rules for dress code have slackened, we will never know. But it's something my husband is not likely to ever forget!
You can buy anything and everything at Harrods. Mementos, really expensive items of jewellery, clothing and china, to foodstuffs like chocolates and biscuits in the food hall.
Lots of money - this is one expensive shop! Sales start tomorrow (28 December 2006), but even in the sales, you will be paying too much I believe. Harrods was a real experience! Wandering around all the different departments was like going on an adventure. The whole store is a series of rooms each representing different types of merchandise. 'Shoes and apparel' may lead on to the 'jewellery' section then on to 'menswear' and so on. You could get seriously lost in there and believe me I did. I think I spent more time trying to find my way in, out or through the place than I did actually shopping. Well the average person like myself doesn't actually go to Harrods to shop more likely to just have a look around and dream about actually being able to shop. The prices were to be seen to be believed and it surprised me to see some people actually buying stuff.
They have just about everything! From duck eggs to diamonds.
Unless you have money to burn - you won't really do any serious shopping. Leave a Comment Theme: Department Store

This Gallery shop near Covent Garden certainly cornered the market when it came to free advertising. Apparantly they came up with the name when the two co-founders sent Christmas cards to each other and one of them send a card with the message emblazoned on it. Hardly very festive, I must say. The shop itself contains furnishings, prints , lamps etc. from mainly British, Scandanavian and Italian sources. When I asked about the lamps, I was politely informed "Well they begin at about 400 pounds and go up to about 1500". OK then, I'll spend my money in B & Q. UPDATE JAN 06: the Drury lane store seems to have closed, but the website is up and running. If they get a new gallery, then i'll update again
If your the sort of person that thinks £90 for a cushion is reasonable - go ahead. They also may still have a concession in Selfidges Department store. Leave a Comment
