The place to shop for electronic goods in London is on Tottenham Court road, above the junction with Oxford Street. The area was quite salubrius at one time, but after the Luffwaffe had dealt with it only ugly concrete messes spang up in the post-war period. These places are now mainly filled with an assortment of electrical and computer type shops. You will need haggle a little to the best prices, but you will still normally get a bargain compared to the chains like Currys and Dixons.

Electronics and computers: Tottenham Court Road

  • Tottenham Court Road is the nearest thing you'll find in London to the Far East when it comes to shopping for electronics. Most of the shops are run by Indians and other Asians although I've noticed recently an increasing number of Russians and Eastern Europeans. Prices aren't generally displayed and a degree of haggling is expected. If you opt to shop here, do your research thoroughly so you know what is a good price for whatever you're after. Haggle like hell and make sure you get all the normal guarantees, etc. To illustrate why it is important to research prices, here is an example. I went shopping for an external CD drive for my laptop. The salesman in the first place I went to showed me a TEAC CDRW and told me it was normally around 120 pounds but I could have it for 90. I told him I wanted to look around the other shops at which point the price immediately dropped to 80. I insisted I wanted to look around and with the prospect of me leaving (and an intervention from the manager) it was reduced to 70. I left anyway to look around. I went into virtually every store in TCR to see what else was available. A little later I saw the same TEAC drive for 50! While I was looking to see what was available the price variations were enormous between shops. They obviously just try to con you at first and this ploy may be successful with some customers. Be very careful. You may be able to get better deals from the high street shops who won't try to pull a fast one. Alternatively, if you have time, on-line shopping seems to be the best way to get a good deal these days.

    Computers, cameras and electronic goods.

You should pay less than high street prices but please read my comments above. If you are not careful you will end up paying more.

Electronics and computers: Best general photographic shop
  • Tip Rating:
  • I've found the branches of the London Camera Exchange very helpful in buying camera equipment, film, processing, and photographic paraphernalia. The staff are knowledgeable and operate with a refreshing lack of condescension - pretty rare these days.

Cameras and camera equipment, including second-hand stuff (they don't make 'em like they used to!). Professional film. Processing if you want something more than just your holiday snaps - especially the speedy service for enlargements. I use the Reading branch mostly, but it's the same lab they use (in Cornwall!).

    As much as you want.

  • If you are into computers and other stuff, get down to one of the PC World. The prices are comparatively lower than Europe.

Electronics and computers: affordable shoppin in london
Go to Hackney Market, its in the north-east of london. Its an open market where you get most of the electronic goods and at an affordable price. Otherwise most of the shoppin centres have the same shops with things priced the same all over UK.

Go for electronic goods in Hackney market. Also try and find one day sales going on in diffrent shops all over london.

    Try and bargain.

    Apple store window display on

The most stylish computers (at least currently) in London are sold on Apple Store on Regent Street. The store is located in an impressive Victorian building with large windows decorated with ornaments. Inside, the style changes instantly to the so well known Apple style; a lot of white and glass, computers on display sparsely set on tables, and so on. Britain is not the cheapest country to buy computer hardware or software, and Apple store has never been very strong on discounts -- so don't go there looking for bargains. Instead, the atmosphere and ability to study the selection at your own pace is worth some pennies at the end.

Electronics and computers: Amazon UK online market
I strongly recommend you to buy electronics from Amazon UK online market. It is safer to buy online than to travel around while walking with your electronics. You may easily get stolen. I was told once a guy was cycling with his bike, carrying his laptop inside his backpack. Someone pulled away his bag and easily grabbed it away and ran off. Amazon offers a free super delivery if you make purchases over BP19, very practical. Delivery takes up to 5 business days.

You can purchase other things, DVDs, books, toys, and other electronics and personal care products.

i find prices are more reasonable that real stores and other online markets

Electronics and computers: Tottenham Court Road
Typical - you leave your window open because its hot then a quick downpour dumps a load of water onto your Nikon camera, after drying it out it seemed the only thing wrong was the battery. Great - it had to happen before I take a trip to London to see the sights. Spent the 1st day using my Siemens phone camera with mixed results so the next day I set off in search of a new battery. I was trying to think of where to go when I remembered pointing someone towards Tottenham Court Road in the London forum a while back. First shop I go in and I get a battery straight away, had enough charge to get a few decent pics and cost a lot less than the high st chains would have charged.
