The triathlon for the 2012 olympics is scheduled for Hyde Park. This I feel is an excellent choice, given the scenery, the landmarks, the serpentine lake and the ability of the park's management to put on large events, such as the recent LIVE8 concert. Even if a grandstand is put up, I suspect that thousands will be able to watch for free. I also suspect that times for the event will be very quick, as the serpentine is a very still lake, and Hyde park is virtually completely flat.

    Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships
The world's most splendid tennis event - weather permitting - is as much about strawberries, cream and tradition as smashing balls. Most tickets for the Centre and Number One courts are distributed by ballot, applications for which must be made the preceding year. Try your luck by sending a stamped addressed envelope to All England Lawn Tennis Club, PO Box 98, Church Road, Wimbledon SW19 5AE. Limited tickets go on sale on the day of play although queues are painfully long.

    Oxford v. Cambridge boat race
This boat race is such a classic that it is now broadcasted all over the World. I wonder if poet Wordsworth's nephew and his friend at the two different universities could imagine this when they first got the idea and Cambridge sent the first challenge to Oxford in 1829. The race starts at Putney and continues to the goal at Mortlake, both nice areas of the Thames so be there early if you want a good spectator spot, or try somewhere in the middle.

    WIMBLEDON - Grand Slam Tennis
Unfortunally I had never had an opportunity to watch the top tennis playes live, but I never miss a single game on TV. If you are in London at the end of June, attending this Grand Slam is a MUST, but seats need to be reserved well in advance. While there, spoil yourself with strawberry and cream, the most famous Wimbledon dessert eaten while tennis players are sweating :). They sell like a few tons of it every year. Wimbledon is also a good place to see the royal family and celebrities from all over the world.

Sunglasses, hat and a seat reservation!

When it comes to sports, there's so many in London that it's almost impossible to keep up with them all! I'll try and give a few. When it comes to football (soccer), London has several major clubs that have devoted followings. The most famous of which is London Arsenal, a professional team that was founded by Royal Ordinance workers in the 19th century (hence the name "Arsenal" and their nickname, "the Gunners"). Arsenal is one of Britain's best teams, and regularly compete with Manchester United as the UK's most successful and popular football clubs. Also up there is Chelsea FC, another widely popular and extremely successful team that hails from London. Other football clubs include Crystal Palace, West Ham, Queens Park, Tottenham, Fulham, Leyton Orient, and Enfield, a non professional league team. Sound confusing? Here's a list of the websites... Arsenal--www.arsenal.co.uk Chelsea--www.chelseafc.co.uk Cyrstal Palace--www.cpfc.premiumtv.co.uk Queens Park--www.qpr.premiumtv.co.uk West Ham--www.westhamunited.co.uk Tottenham--www.spurs.co.uk Perhaps sportswise, London is most famous for the Wimbledown Championships, the world's most famous tennis competition. Played at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (even though a Brit hasn't won Wimbledon in decades) in late June/early July, the world's best tennis players come here to do battle. Check out all the websites for prices and times.

Wembley Stadium on August, 22. England vs Germany

  • With 90,000 seats the stadium has the second largest capacity in Europe (after the Camp Nou, Barcelona), and the largest in the world with every seat under cove. This capacity is separated into 3 tiers of seating, with the lower tier holding 34,303 spectators, the middle one 16,532 and the upper one 39,165 The stadium is also the most expensive stadium ever built. I was there to watch a friendly match England vs Germany on 22. August, 2007 and the atmosphere was amazing, even though Germany won 1:2 :-)

    The Arsenal
You can see football all over the world, in the UK and even in London, but you'll never see the game played as well as you will by witnessing the Arsenal. And where better to see it than the Emirates Stadium? Okay. There are a few other teams in London. You could go and be bored by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's toy team at Chelsea, see the most expensively assembled team of misfits ever seen in the UK beat the likes Wigan 1-0 or see them whip the butts of mighty Macclesfield. They are so pathetic and boring even he hardly smiles during a game!! Or travel across north London to see the perennial failures Tottenham lose again.... or you could see the glory that is Arsenal.

if you were there during the past 5 days, you'd have been aprt of South Africa Cricket history Graeme Smith with his 2nd double century of 259 has overhauled the Don's 254 to become the highest-scoring overseas player at Lord's. whilst Makhaya Ntini took 10 match wickets as South Africa won the second Test at Lord's with some degree of ease. Along the way, a jubilant crowd was treated to an exhilarating ton by Andrew Flintoff, who was finally stumped for 142. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/eng_v_sa_2003/3111231.stm see also >> Salute the young master by Jon Henderson Sunday August 3, 2003 for an interesting insight into another Graeme compared with our own legendary Graeme Pollock, Shaun's uncle - http://sport.guardian.co.uk/cricket/comment/0,10070,1011512,00.html
