The Flora London Marathon
  • Tip Rating:
  • Around this time (22nd April) every year, on a Sunday in April, thousands and thousands of runners of all shapes, sizes and ability, take to the streets of London between Greenwich and The Mall, for the Flora London Marathon. There is some disruption to transport with roads closed and some tube and train delays and cancellations but the atmosphere on the streets is amazing and far outweighs any minor transportation inconveniences! The volunteers and emergency services do a brilliant job here and there is a real carnival feel to the whole day! Well done London! :)) The official website has all the details you could possibly need about this fantastic event.

    Skateboarders paradise..
  • Tip Rating:
  • For many years the concrete junglely mess on the South bank around the National Film Theatre, The National Theatre and the Shell building has proved to be a Mecca for Skateboarders. There have been various attempts to remove them over the years, but they do little harm and are often quite willing to 'Show off' as tourists and tour buses on Waterloo Bridge pass by. If your into it i"m sure you can turn up and join in without much of a problem.

    A quick double Salko, and.........splat.........
  • Tip Rating:
  • For the past few years a skating rink has been put up in the courtyard to Somerset house (Just off the Strand) over December and January The setting is superb, although at around ten quid for a skate it's not cheap. Kids however get in for about six quid.

London offers a few places where you can go horseriding. One of them is quite close to where we live, in Wimbledon Village. One can taken them into the local parks and commons. The horses share some paths with pedestrians, but mostly have their own. Theirs are the rougher paths with all the tell-tale signs of horses! I generally prefer taking the paths that horses dont go down as I am so often looking around (and up!), I dont look down that much and the last thing I want is to stand in a royal 'something'! It is a lovely sport - horse riding - and its lovely to see people of all ages partaking in this sport in sucha developed city.

    Golfing in London
  • Tip Rating:
  • I am not a big golfer at all, have played only a couple times in my life in South Africa. I have played Adventure Golf quite a few times though and thoroughly enjoy that! (especially when I beat my husband) :) Wimbledon Common has a beautiful golf course. It belongs to the London Scottish Golf Club. This course was originally seven holes, but is now eighteen holes, laid out by Tom Dunn in 1871. What is refreshing about this course is that it is uncommercialised, hazard fee (virtually), and still quite natural. If I was a keen golfer this is the club I would play at (besides the fact is is across the road from me!).

These are photos of the London Scottish Golf Club. Around the corner is the entrance, with a big sign saying 'Dont forget to pay your GREEN FEES'.... what's nice about this course is there are no 'exclusivity' htings to consider. Anyone can come and play a game of golf, and you dont even need your own golf set, you can hire everything you need from the golf club house shop. They offer coaching for £20 an hour too. They are quite strict with the rule of every golfer wearing a bright red 'upper garment' (t-shirt/jumper) whilst playing golf. This can also be hired. (A similar tip appears in my Wimbledon Common page, if you have rated that one, please do not rate this one. Thanks).

I have visited 4 ice skating rinks in London. The first was the Marble Arch Ice Rink. Situated in the middle of an island in the middle of a thoroughfare of traffic, we entered it vis the subway. The rink was small, my shoes were too big for me (I only managed one lap they were so sore!), it wasnt that well organised. Then we visited the Natural History Museum Ice Rink. It is set in a BEAUTIFUL location, next to one of Londons most intricate buildings and some tall trees that line the road. It was well organised, there were quite a few monitors on the rink at the same time as the customers, so if you needed help they were there. They were stricter in getting people off (and on) in time and was a far nicer experience. The other two rinks were by the Tower of London and the City Hall. They were also nice, but the Natural History rink gets my vote! It is amazing how they froze the ice in these locations, and KEPT it at the right temperature for quite a while. Very well done! If you can do this, do, it is great fun, especially for the kids.

You dont need to bring your own ice skates, they will be provided for you.

Row, row , row your boat gently down the stream...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Belt off, trousers down..life is such a scream. Enough of General Melchett's rendition of the boating song. One of the most romantic (careful here Sourbugger, don't give the impression you care) things to do in London is hire a rowing boat in Regents Park. Sod the cost - it really is a very pleasant way to spend a lazy afternoon. You may even see some nesting Herons.

Available April- September from 10.30 AM

In London's Parks, it is normally pretty free to do what you like (well within reason of course). You can therefore find people engaging in all sorts of passtimes and recreations in them. With a lot of paved paths going through Hyde Park, it is quite popular for roller-bladers to do there thing here. I have never seen skate-boarders, but I don't see why they shouldn't be here too. In this case, the girl had been trying to weave in and out of the little bollards whilst going backwards, although in this picture she was simply going backwards!

Bring your own gear. You'll need the normal roller-blades and protection (such as padding etc).

Walking and hiking in London parks
  • Tip Rating:
  • When we last went for a really long walk, it was a few kilometres long (about 10km). We stopped here and there for some water and a brief rest, and then carried on. That is what is so special about London. It is set apart from other cities with all the green space it still has, huge parks and commons, and caters for a lot of exercise outside of the concrete jungle. It is a lovely place to walk, whether you are doing it seriously as part of an exercise routine, or out for a stroll with your friends.

    Ice skating...
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are in London during the festive season and fancy some ice skating there are every year more and more places/buildings offering facilities. The latest is the Tower of London, and they have created a rink on the moat. Its very popular so try to prebook or turn up early...a great way to spend an evening!
