Riding on Rotten Row

I first heard about Rotten Row when I was editing a newsletter for a special interest group on horses. One of our members went to England and mentioned it. Rotten Row is the most famous riding trail in Central London. It is three quarters of a mile (1,125 metres) of soft, sandy track. This picture is NOT of Rotten Row, but of riders near Wellington Arch on the south-east corner of the park. The strange name is said to be because of Londoners' inability or unwillingness to parler français: The name originally, was the Route du Roi, built by William III in 1690 as the royal carriage drive from Whitehall to Kensington Palace, his favourite residence. It is in Hyde Park, King Henry VIII's former royal hunting park. Riding for exercise and recreation was invented on Rotten Row in Hyde Park in the 1600s. Here, in the late 17th and 18th century, men galloped up and down Rotten Row, while ladies in long dresses rode sidesaddle along the adjoining Ladies' Ride.

Well obviously you need a horse. One place to hire one is: Ross Nye Stables 8 Bathurst Mews, off Sussex Gardens, London W2 2SB (Underground station: Lancaster Gate/Paddington). Their website says that they have one-hour hacks: virtually every hour on the hour from 7am. Weekends and high season are busy, so book early. Riding hats and boots can be provided. Cost: £35, adults, £30 children. The stables are British Horse Society approved (1995 Award of Merit). I have not done this.

    Go fly a kite!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Flying kites is a terrific way to relax. Alternatively it's a great way to get some serious exercise - it depends on the kite. Some of the big flexifoils take all your strength to keep you on your feet! Hampstead Heath is the classic place to fly them. Kensington Gardens is good too, for gentler kites. Somebody once told me that it's considered seriously naff to fly a kite in Kensington Gardens that you haven't made yourself - but that's taking it too seriously. Just be careful of Prince Charles's personal helicopter if you go there!

The home of cricket is Lords and it is a fantastic place to watch the game. The ground is small enough to be intimate and the English fans support their team with a huge amount of passion. The Lords shop is stocked full of items to take back home and the beer tents never, ever run out!! Tickets cost 40 pounds so it's not cheap but worth the money as far as I am concerned.

Cushion, binoculars for the close up look & a pack of cards if it rains.

    Wimbledon Tennis
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wimbledon is the world's premier Grand Slam tennis championships. Thousands of tennis lover come to London just to watch that game. You could be there too, wandering around the outside courts, sitting on the fabulous new Number One court savouring those famous strawberries and cream - with perhaps a glass of champagne or Pimms - spotting those tennis celebrities and well known personalities

Book your seat well in advance.

    Cycling through the Parks
  • Tip Rating:
  • Well it does help if you actually turn the pedals! Some of London's Parks (especially Hyde Park) are so large, it is possible to cycle around inside them for a while without covering too much of the same area too many times. There's also the Serpentine lake to ride around as you can see in this picture. I wouldn't recommend cycling round London's roads too much though unless you have a death wish or are a little unhinged!

A bike and something to lock it up with if you stop anywhere

By the banks of the Thames in Fulham a Premiership venue awaits you. Craven Cottage, the home of Fulham Football Club. So says the club website and I'd agree... The newly converted Craven Cottage is well worth a visit especially in the summer where you can enjoy a few beers before the match on the embankment behind the Riverside Stand. The Putney End has a large section for neutral supporters where tickets can be bought with cash at the turnstyles. I last visited in April 07 to see Fulham host Portsmouth, not a bad game and Fulham got a well deserved 93rd minute equaliser. I also visited in July 05 to see the Celtic fans outnumber the home support by 2-1. The game was a 0-0 draw with Zurawski missing a penalty.

  • Directions: Nearest tube is Putney Bridge, out of the tube station, follow the road around to the left to the footpath into Bishops Park. The ground is a 10 minute walk. Take a bus from Hammersmith tube down the Fulham Palace Road to just before Putney Bridge.

    Football Grounds
  • Tip Rating:
  • London is blessed with many football teams in the top flight. My favourite ground I would have to say is Highbury home of current champions Arsenal. Others include Chelsea, Charlton, Fulham, Crystal Palace and the no hopers from White Hart Lane.

Walking and Cycling on the Regent's canal
  • Tip Rating:
  • London's Regent's Canal runs from the Limehouse Basin to Paddington Basin. Once the city's major transportation artery, it fell into disuse like so many of the UK's inland waterways. Nowadays it is now possible to cycle and walk along sections of of the canal towpaths (for cycling, a permit must be obtained first from most post offices. The permits are free of charge and cyclists must have them on display whilst cycling along the canal.) They are also downloadable from the Waterscape website (Britains official waterways guide). Lots of really helpful info about cycling on the canal towpaths can be found on the Wesminster Cyclists website. There seems to be some conflicting advice regarding cycling permits between the Westminster website and the Waterscape website who say that a permit is not required for cycling in London. Check first! Free guided walks can be taken from the London Canal Museum - full details are given on the London Canal Museum website:

A bike and (possibly!) a permit

    Rugby at Twickenham Stadium
  • Tip Rating:
  • Twickenham - home of England rugby. Refurbishment work has just been carried out & there are 4 stands each with a bar & some kind of fast food facilities. There are fast food vendors all around the outside of the stadium towers. There are toilets on levels 1, 4 & 5 bad luck if you are on level 2&3 of the towers. There is disabled facilities and seating available. Security is tight & bags are checked when you enter the stadium. When you leave the stadium traffic is monitered as well as people traffic which they do with horses. There is a complimentary bus from Rugby Road to Twickenham or Richmond station although I have never seen it. Transport to the match is either walk from Twickenham station or a mile from Richmond & follow the crowd

There is a great vibe at the matches be it international or rugby sevens. At an international match the national athems will be played & there are usually mascots. It is very different to a rugby match fans are not segregated. Check out the website for ticket information.

    Tours of Lord's Cricket Ground
  • Tip Rating:
  • Take a tour around Lord’s Cricket Ground in St. John’s Wood, home of both Marylebone and Middlesex cricket clubs and considered to be “The Home of Cricket.” Take in the 1890’s built pavilion with the famous Long Room then have a look around the MCC Museum with exhibits covering 400 years of cricket including the Ashes urn. Lords also has one of the few Real Tennis courts in the UK. This original form of the game is also called Royal or Court Tennis or Jeu de Paume in other countries. You can then continue round the ground and get great views from the new Grandstand, the Mound Stand and the iconic and strangely shaped Media centre opposite the pavilion, which somehow finished above St Paul’s Cathedral in a 2001 poll of Britain’s fifty best buildings. Tours take place most days throughout the year but it is advisable to check first as they are curtailed if there is a big game being played. Cost is around £8 including admission to the museum.
