Football crazy
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you enter a pub in London, there's a good chance the locals will be talking about the latest football (soccer) matches. Pick up a local paper to see listings of games and times.

    Twickenham
  • Tip Rating:
  • Twickenham is the home of the English Rugby team. I've been there once; I watched Ireland lose - almost too kind a word - to England.

    International Horseshow Olympia
This wonderful display of horsemanship and skill has this year, 2007, celebrated its cententary in Olympia, S Kensington. For 100 years this has been the location for international show jumping competitions with world class competitors, dressage, displays of extreme skill and showmanship by talented equestrians from all over the world, including the Ukrainian Cossacks ... as well as traditional performances from the Royal Household Cavalry and The Royal Mounted Police.

Other more informal events are the Shetland Pony Sweepstakes and the dog agility show - both of which are great fun and children just love them!

Apart from all this, there are masses of stalls on the upper level selling everything you could possibly want for your horse or pony, from a curry comb to a numnah.

If you are missing any pony/horse equipment, this is the place to get it so bring plenty of money. Apart from that, you don't really need to bring anything with you. There are plenty of places for meals and refreshments. Food can be taken into the central arena but glass bottles are not permitted.

Tickets for this fabulous annual event aren't cheap, but it really is a most memorable experience and if you have horsey inclinations, or pony mad kids, then it really is a must see if you are in London in Dec. Check the website for ticket prices etc.

Oh, and for those who are interested in this sort of thing... there is always a member of the Royal Family present at this event. Last night it was Camilla Parker Bowles, (whoever she is.)

    OXFORD CAMBRIDGE BOAT RACE

2004 was the 150th edition of this very old traditional boat race. This race marks the begining of the Spring, from time onwards we start to enjoy more and more outdoor activities.

    Rowing on the Thames
    Not always picturesque! - London
    Not always picturesque!

If you want to row in London you have lots of choice, there are clubs specialising in junior rowing, men's rowing, women's rowing, costal rowing...etc...

My favorite club in London is Thames Rowing Club, located in Putney on the Embankment. Choose your time to boat carefully, or you may be lost in the wake of the River Police, or washed ashore by the various cruisers that tour up and down all weekend. The perfect time is early morning on a day with no wind or rain - you might just have to endure a few not so perfect ones though!!

Usually you row away from London towards Kingston, but occasionally the weather (and coach) are agreeable to going towards the city, where you can row past the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben... I have only done this in an eight - anything smaller would be asking for trouble!!

    F1 comes to London
A good idea? To promote the upcoming British Grand Prix someone persueded the mayor to let the F1 cars do a few parade laps around the center of London, it was crowded and it was noisy but it was worth it.

    Barnet F.C.
Not exactly an extreme sport but the weather and the price of cider at Barnet is. It snowed the day I went to Underhill and Barnet were as boring as we (Clwb Peldroed Y Wrecsam) were that day.
