Home of Queen Liz, Buckingham Palace is also the HQ of the monarchy. You can get access to some areas of the Palace by organsied tour. Most visitors come to see the changing of the guard. It takes place at 11.30am each day for about 3/4 of an hour. In winter time it happens every second day.

It's worth to visit the Buckingham Palace other then at "changing guard time" as well. You can see some beautiful details, like for example the fence itself! :)

Thanks for the extra info from b1bob: the design of the fence is called "Fleur-de-lis".

The Victoria Memorial is an imposing, tall edifice by the sculptor Thomas Brock (1911) with a surround by the architect Aston Webb. It is 82 ft high, and has a large statue of Victoria facing eastwards, away from Buckingham Palace. On the north (Mall side) is an Angel of Justice with subsidiary figures, and on the opposite side a more peaceful group with an Angel of Truth. The Justice figure is an archetypical Brock sculpture, and is worth careful study - know this statue, and you know much of Brock.

The fourth side of the monument, facing west towards Buckingham Palace, is Charity. Up above, on the pinnacle, is a gilded figure of Victory with two seated figures. The plinth, raised by four steps above the surround, has ships' prows facing the corners, suggestive of Britain ruling the seas, and maintaining the nautical accent to The Mall. The whole edifice and statues are of white marble, of which, remarkably, some 2,300 tons were used

    my journey

I was sitting there for at least 15 minutes , doing nothing but watching the cars passed by ...enjoying the sun bathing and occasional breeze that glided by ...and my mind was living in the moment , thinking of nothing but absorbing the every essence and vibrance of the place ....its cool ...

  • It may be the Queen's home, in London. It is also beautiful and epitomises Britishness. To walk the Mall is to be in London.

From Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace - A secret aiplane runway for the queen, should she need it. Little things like this make Britain (UK) what it is.

To watch the sentry guards sweating in their fur hats, to peak through the railings hoping for a glimpse of royalty. This is London. A bit sad really - but I did it and so does everyone else! Of course, nowadays you can pay to go in. Silly me, thinking that is what my taxes were for. Thank you Mam.

Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of Britain's sovereigns since 1837.

It evolved from a town house that was owned from the beginning of the eighteenth century by the Dukes of Buckingham. Today it is The Queen's official residence, with 775 rooms.

Although in use for the many official events and receptions held by The Queen, areas of Buckingham Palace are opened to visitors on a regular basis.

How can you come to London without seeing the Changing of the Guard? If you wish to see the ceremony inside the Palace courtyard itself, you may want to show up a couple of hours early, and then just sit tight. The crowds gather early and take up the good spaces.

    State Banquet

Since the Queen found out that Sue and I were going to spend our first day in London on my birthday she decided to throw a little party for us. I couldn't believe it when we walked into her quaint little house and as we walked up the grand staircase the music started to play and we were escorted to the head of the table for a real live State Banquet. Oh wait a minute, I guess I was relating the dream I had, it's probably the same dream I had about the financial markets taking a plunge the next day. Oops, unfortunately that second one wasn't a dream.

Anyway, yes we did get to visit Buckingham Palace on our first day in London. And yes, they did have the room set up for a State Banquet which was the attraction in 2008 for the annual Summer Opening. In 2009 the attraction is the Queen's Wardrobe. I'm glad we went last year. The State Banquet setting was just a wee bit over the top. I would hate to be one of the kitchen staff on the day of a State Banquet as I'm sure it's just about as hectic as one of Gordon Ramsey's Kitchens.

The Summer Openings of Buckingham Palace usually occur in the months of August and September. The closing date when we were there was actually on the last Sunday of September as it is this year. Admission cost (we bought tickets on line ahead of time and then picked them up the day of our visit) is 16.50 pounds for adults and 9.50 pounds for children. No photography or videoing is allowed inside the palace (I borrowed the first picture from a website - all other pictures are mine). After you go through the inside you are allowed to walk through part of the Queen's Garden and Park area behind the Palace.

It is nice to see the Palace and walk around, although the whole place gets very crowded and you feel like you have arrived to the biggest tourist trap. If you want to see the change of guards, you better get there very early or you won't see much.
