At the western edge of Kensington Gardens/Hyde Park stands Kensington Palace, a less ornate residence than Buckingham or St James. Although this was the London home of Princess Diana at the time of her death, its association with the royal family dates back to the 17th century. William III purchased it in 1689 after his ascension. Several sovereigns have died here, author William Thackeray died at No. 2 in 1863. Queen Victoria was born here and continued to live here until her ascension in 1837.

  • Once a private country house, but now visitors can visit Kensington Palace which was the birthplace of Queen Victoria and home to Princess Diana between 1981-1997.

I did not go in the palace. I stayed at Thistle Kensington Park hotel which is right opposite the palace garden so I went on a walk around the garden and finally discovered the palace, as I do not have the time did not get to go in but manage to get a brochure about the palace.

On permanent display inside the palace are the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection with outfits from the 18th century to the present day including a range of glamorous dresses worn by HM Queen Elizabeth II and unique evening gowns modeled by Diana, Princess of Wales.

It also house 18th Orangery and Sunken Garden designed to host elaborate court entertainments during the reign of Queen Anne.

Kensington Gardens is often regarded as the western part of Hyde Park but is separated from it by a road. Similar to Hyde Park (or let's say: similar to whole London) it has a lot of monuments, statues, fountains and small gardens. The northern part along Bayswater road is rather quite - with the exception of the road itself. Here you will find such peaceful places like the italian gardens. To the south, there is a lively area around Albert Memorial where people meet to play street hockey or for inline skating.

The park is open from 06:00 a.m. until dusk.

I wasn't sure to put this under shopping or must see, well it can be both. This is a really big department store and one of the most famous in the world. Here you can buy almost everything, but you need a lot of money. Although I bought something. A Harrods pen, nice to use at work. This store is so big an the interior is so special you could spend a day here. I didn't do that because London has so much more to offer.

Danielle was thrilled to find the Royal Albert Hall. This is where the Spice Girls held a concert in their movie Spice World. This was one of many many Spice World references I was introduced to on our visit to London. I learned about the bus leaping across the Tower Bridge in Spice World. I learned about the Spice Girls sitting in front of the Prince Albert Memorial. I learned more about the Spice Girls and Spice World than I ever thought possible.

My reference to Danielle..."Now we know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall...I'd love to turn you on." John Lennon ...A Day In The Life.

The hall was completed in 1871. It was originally intended to be called the Hall of Arts and Sciences but Queen Victoria changed it to be named in her husbands memory when she laid the foundation stone in 1868.

I was not prepared for the size of this memorial. It is really a huge memorial. The beautiful gold guilding was just redone and unveiled in1998. It had been painted black since 1915 to avoid being noticed during World War I. The monument stands 175 feet high. It is located just across the street from the Royal Albert Hall.

With the exception of the umbrella incident we really enjoyed Buckingham Palace. However we found Kensington Palace to be more enjoyable. It is the memory of Princess Di that makes Kensington Palace so special. We were able to see some of of her gowns which were on display here during our visit. This was really very special. Knowing that she had lived her with her two boys when they were young make this place seem much more real to us than Buckingham Palace.

And there is Danielle again, posing at some gold guilded gates once more. From these pictures it looks like we spent our entire trip looking for gates to pose by.

Kensington Gardens is one of nine royal parks in London, and used to be the private garden of Kensington Palace. It is located just west of Hyde Park, and borders South Kensington to the south, Kensington High Street to the west and Bayswater to the north. Laid out in a relatively formal way, its 275 acres contain the Round Pond, the sunken Dutch Garden, Albert Memorial and the Serpentine Gallery.

The Albert Memorial was commissioned by Queen Victoria in memory of her husband, Prince Albert. It was unveiled in 1872, and consists of an ornate pavilion containing a seated statue of Albert, surrounded by sculptures depicting the four continents of the British Empire (Africa, Asia, Europe and The Americas). It is located in South Kensington, just opposite the Royal Albert Hall.

This memorial to Diana, Princess of Wales was opened by Her Majesty The Queen on 6th July 2004. Most Londoners hated the design as soon as it was published...but it was built anyway!

The design company claimed ' the design aims to reflect Diana's life, water flows from the highest point in two directions as it cascades, swirls and bubbles before meeting in a calm pool at the bottom'. Londoners still hated it!

Almost as soon as it opened it had to close as the design was seen to be dangerous, with various kiddies slipping and hurting themselves!

Maybe overtime people will get to like it...
