  • The Elfin Oak - London
    The Elfin Oak
    by KennetRose
A dead tree stump carved and painted with the figures of elves, gnomes and other such beings as if it was their home. Perhaps the most engaging piece of whimsy London has to offer.

The stump, taken from Richmond Park in the 1920s, was carved at the instigation of radical socialist politician (we had them in those days) George Lansbury, and yes, he was Angela Lansbury's grandfather.

In an earlier periods of glory, the Oak maintained lovingly by the eccentric comedian-philosopher Spike Milligan. As Milligan's health declined, so did the Elfin Oak. When I visited in November 2002 I was delighted to see the Oak had been restored to its former glory with a bequest from Milligan, who sadly died early in 2002, but saddened that it had been enclosed in a cage, victim to the "look but don't touch because we can't be bothered to do proper maintenance" attitude that is all too prevalent these days. Such things are to be enjoyed by all the senses, not just looked at from a safe distance. Still, it's worth spending some time just enjoying all the detail.

Built in memory of Queen Victoria's husband who died young (which is why most of London's railings were painted black in mourning) this has been refurbished over the last few years. Near the Albert Hall it is a stunning piece of Victoriana.

I only saw this place from the outside but my guidebook said it was were Queen Anne liked to have her tea there, and now you can too. It's houses a cafe that's open to the public. I landscape architecture surrounding the Orangery is quite nice.

Kensington Palance is located on the grounds of Hyde Park. What an awesome place to live in! It's good to be the king, or queen, or prince, or princess for that matter. Kensington Palace is inhabited by members of the Royal Family. Princess Diana lived there until her unfortunate death in 1997. It has become a place of pilgrimage for her admirers.

Kensington Palace had it's origins in a private house. After its sale to William III, modest additions were made with the help of Sir Christopher Wren, and later by William Kent for George I.

Be sure to visit, they now admit visitors into the State Apartments and the Royal Ceremonial Collection.

Opened in 1870 this round concert hall modelled the Roman amphitheatre is nearly a quarter of a mile in circumference. Best known for the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts, July to September, it in fact holds concerts, exhibitions and conferences all year round. It will seat 8,000. Worth going for the experience!

Round Pond is a the main body of water in the Kensington Gardens. It is by no means large or expansive but it is a nice place to sit down and catch a breather or two. The swans here are very beautiful. So are the Canada geese who seem to have lost their way and found themselves in London. Silly geese!

The Sunken 'Dutch' Gardens had to be my favorite part of Hyde Park. Well technically it's Kensignton Gardens at this point. It is one of various "attractions," for lack of a better word, surrounding Kensington Palace, but it seemed like such a peaceful place.

From it's surrounding walk, glimpses of the lily pool are framed between bleached lime trees. If you're lucky, you will see a Grey Heron looking for the occasional frog meal in the lily pond. If you look closely at my picture, you can see it standing to the left of the left-most fountain.

This was the principal residence of the Royal Family in the 18thC and minor royals still have apartments here, as did Princess Diana. Half of the building is open to the public and has exhibitions of court dresses, including Princess Diana's wedding dress.

A quiet road of distinctive houses, built to their own designs by a group of artists in the 19th century.

The Tower House is currently the London residence of Jimmy Page, once of Led Zeppelin ("who?", I hear younger readers ask!)

The Royal Albert Hall is one of the city’s principal concert halls. Every summer it is the site of the `Proms`, a series of classical music concerts.

The hall was named for Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. The queen laid the hall’s foundation stone in 1868, seven years after his death.
