South Bank and London Eye: London Eye
  • Tip Rating:
  • The London Eye is worth the ten pounds. The best idea is to wake up early and get there right when it opens at 9:30am. There was no queue and we didn't have to share our ride with too many people. The views are great, and it's a good way to get orientated with London if you have never been before.

South Bank and London Eye: British Airways London Eye
  • Tip Rating:
  • London Eye is one of the most popular attractions in London these days. It's basically the largest ferris wheel in the world (even though technically it isn't a ferris wheel) and its height and its location just opposite the houses of parliament makes it a perfect scenic view point.

I went there early in the morning but unfortunately I only realised after having spend £11 for a ticket that views weren't really good that day. It looked sunny but going up you could hardly see St. Paul's cathedral as it was a very hazy day.

Nevertheless I got some nice shots of the wheel and - apart from being scared of heights like never before - enjoyed my trip. It's expensive though - so if you are on a tight budget you can give it a miss without having to worry you missed the best about London.

  • The world's largest observation wheel offers a spectacular way to take in over 55 of London's most famous landmarks in just 30 minutes! Combine your flight on the Eye with a 45 minute circular cruise on the Thames. Departing from the pier next to the Eye the commentated tour takes you from the Houses of Parliament to the Tower of London and back to the London Eye.
The London Eye In-flight mini guide is good to get beforehand if youre not familiar with London's skyline. The mini guide provides a pocket-sized guide to London in a handy pull out format. The guide gives panoramic maps from each direction of the capsule, labelling the main landmarks of London.

South Bank and London Eye: London Eye
  • Tip Rating:
  • With a diameter of 135 m the British Airways London Eye is the world's tallest ferris wheel. It has 32 glass capsules which offer views of up to 25 miles across London.
Tickets aren't cheap (adults: 10,50 GBP, 2002), but on a clear day or evening it is definitely worth visiting.

South Bank and London Eye: THE LONDON EYE
  • Tip Rating:
  • The London Eye, or as it is sometimes known, The Millenium Wheel is a must see, or must ride on, when in London.

The British Airways London Eye has become the UK's top paid for visitor attraction.

The Eye was designed by David Marks and Julia Barfield, and the drawings were originally submitted for a competition run by a newspaper and the Architecture Foundation.

For a lot more detailed information, and an inter - active construction "game" that you play, fitting the correct pieces together in the order that the whole structure was constructed, is a fun way to learn how it was from start to finish, so go to the website and check out all about this marvellous piece of engineering.

When you take your "flight" as it is called in one of the "pods" you get a panoramic view of London . It is situated right on the bank of the River Thames and when you purchase a souvenier book, it shows you the landmark buildings to look out for, North, South, East and West of the Wheel.

You can book tickets on line, and the costs are shown there too. Price Oct 2004 was £11.50. adults, but check for concessions.

I will post a lot of photographs of the wheel, and photo's of the landmarks you can see in a travelogue, so do please have a look.

Unfortunately the day we visited it was pouring with rain and overcast, but once tickets are purchased(ours was a present) you could not change them, so the photographs are a little dull.

NBThe pods are air conditioned and wheelchair accessible, . There is also Private Hire Capsule facilities, call 0870 220 2223.
Disabled bookings - as there is a limit to the number of wheelchairs on a flight at any one time, you are asked to book in advance on +44(0)870 990 8885 I have given the UK code for overseas visitors.

South Bank and London Eye: London's Eye
  • Tip Rating:
  • Although l did not personally take the trip on the London eye because l am terrified of heights.. my friends did and the sun was shinning most of the time. Whilst l was waiting for them to come down l took a walk along South Bank. Lots of street entertainment, you can access the Tate Gallery along with Shakespears Globe Theatre. Cross over the wobbly bridge (its not wobbly anymore) for a great view of the river Thames. l also came across a book fair and that evening live open air entertainment. A wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon / evening.

If you have seen all the usual London sights there is a great way to spend a day in London: Walk along the South Bank walk. You will see fantastic buildings and galleries such as the Oxo tower and Tate Modern, beautiful bridges, great buildings, markets etc etc.

I walked from London Eye to Butler's Warf, then over Tower Bridge to St. Katherine Docks and back on the other side of the Thames to Monument tube station. It took the whole day - with stops at Shakespeare's Globe theatre, Tate Modern, The London Eye and some pubs and restaurants along the way.

In the afternoon I met my great VT tourguide MOB1US who showed me places I wouldn't have found on my own. Thanks for the beautiful day :)

South Bank and London Eye: Oxo Tower Wharf
  • Tip Rating:
  • In 1920 the building - which is now full of great galleries, arty shops and offices - was bought by the company that produced OXO. The architect wanted to place electric lights at the tower to promote OXO but he wasn't allowed to place advertising. That's why he included the letters into the windows. A nice trick and a beautiful building!

There's a public viewing terrace on the top floor which you can go to for free.
