When I went here the bridge was closed to the public so I can't say much about it. The bridge is so famous that doesn't need any presentation; if you have the chance to climb up to the top of the two towers that make the bridge, I guess one can enjoy a wonderful view of both Thames' sides up till Embankment/Charing Cross. If you take, as I did, a cruise down the river to Greenwich or the Barriers, the bridge towering over you when passing under it is really a breathtaking experience.

With continued development of East End commerce, the need arrised for a southern more crossing over the Thames River that wouldn't cut off the boats from accessing the ports as well. Finally in 1884, Horace Jones' design was chosen from over 50 designs sent in to a special Bridge Commitee. Unfortunately Jones' passed away before he got to see a finished version of the bridge. Just eight years it took to build this spectacular bridge which was opened by the Prince of Wales on the 30 of June 1894. Now you can visit the bridge and the Tower Bridge Exhibition which provides visitors with an insight into the history and development of the bridge. Entrance for adults is £5.50 but there are plenty of deals for families, seniors, and students. I regret not actually going up to see the exhibit.

You should definitely take a walk on it or at least take a good look at it ... it is so stunning! It will not take you too long to walk from one end to the other but if you stop in the middle you will have a nice view from there, e.g. on the Tower!

You would be forgiven for thinking that this is the London Bridge like the Americans did! It's a gorgeous piece of architecture from 1894 and a landmark most visitors instantly fall in love with as a strong symbol for London. It was in fact built as congestion had become a major problem in East London where there was no bridge across the Thames (since London Bridge was the easternmost bridge due to East End shipping). The reason it looks the way it does is in fact so that shipping would not be disturbed as there was still a lot of traffic continuing up the river. Originally, people could walk across it at the top bit when the bridge was open, but now the top section is closed as most people simply never bothered getting up there but waited for the ships to pass instead. You can go inside to see the impressive engineering too - not run by steam today but by oil and electricity but nevertheless impressive.

if you are going to take an open top bus tour , book with original tour company, we did and got a free thames river cruise! so worth it, weenjoyed both so much, great to go on thames and go under tower bridge on boat, and to get it for free ...even better!

tower bridge is one the most beautiful bridge i've ever saw. it was classy. if i din rem wrongly, the flop movie 'spice world' used it as one of the movie scenes. ;p near to the tower bridge, is the london bridge.. doesn't it reminds u of the childhood rhymes 'london bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down... '
