  • This is perhaps one of the most photographed landmarks in London, Tower bridge with h.m.s. Belfast on the right which you can also visit. The building of the bridge took 8 years to construct and 5 major contractors untill its completion in 1894 and with a total labour force of 432 it was a big undertaking for its day. Two massive piers had to be sunk into the river bed to suport the bridge and over 11,000 tons of steel made up the framework for the towers and walkways. This was then clad in granite to protect the steel from corosion.

Tower Bridge: Cross the Tower Bridge!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Go to the other side of the bridge! There are lovely things, other than the bridge to check out. It's such a cool bridge, too. I don't know if you can go up inside it anymore...but it's just fun. It looks like a cake or a toy from afar, but it's 100% Bridge from up close.

    Tower Bridge: Tower Bridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Tower Bridge is perhaps London's most easily recognizable landmark. It is also often mistakenly referred to as the London Bridge by foreigners. The London Bridge (or rather the new London Bridge, the original is now in Arizona) itself is actually the bridge just West of the Tower Bridge. It was constructed in the 2nd half of 19th century when traffic problems in the already large city were becoming overwhelming. The bridge had to be able to allow ships to pass, while hopefully preserving some sort of continuous passage between the banks. A few designs were submitted, but the one now familiar to us all ended up the winner. The bridge was built using a steel structure, with a pedestrian walkway up above the main roadway that allowed continuous passage, even when the bridge was open. The two stone towers of the bridge do not actually carry any structural load, but were still made to look the way they do to fit in with their surroundings, including the adjacent Tower of London. These days you can tour the bridge. You will go up an elevator to the top of a tower, where you get to see a short video about the history of the bridge, see a few models, including the competing designs, and get a nice view of London from the two pedestrian walkways linking the towers. Some nice photo ops from up there too. Once back down at street level, you can explore the engine room where the original bridge machinery is still preserved. The two halves of the roadway were originally raised using steam engines and hydraulics, but over time the mechanism was switched over to electric motors instead of steam.

  • This Victorian creation is probably one of the most recognisable bridges in the world and one of London's most well-known representations. The bridge is still active and the engine room can be visited as part of the exhibition within the bridge. When not viewing the bridge itself, views from the bridge give a perspective of some of what the River Thames sees of London.

Tower Bridge is really one of the most beautiful bridges I have seen. It is very famous and has been photographed millions of times. It is another one of those locations that is synonomous with London. We are standing just outside of the entrance to the London Tower with the bridge behind us. London is so full of great spots to take photographs. There is always something famous and beautiful in the background when you pose for a picture.

    Tower Bridge: The Tower Bridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you want the bascules raised, 24 hours notice is required and, these days, it doesn't happen very often. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Tower Bridge was first used in 1894. In those days, the arms of the bridge were lifted an average of 16 times a day and it was done by steam power. They were converted to electrical power in 1976. The bridge was designed so that when the bascules were raised, pedestrians still had access across the river. The gangway that you can see going from the top of one tower to the other could be accessed via stairwells in the towers. Being a lazy generation, you can take a lift these days. I love the story about the wealthy American who bought London Bridge for about 2.5 million. He thought it was the Tower Bridge. There's a message in there.

Most people are thinking of this bridge when they talk about London Bridge (which is now in Arizona anyway). I was intrigued to find that it is possible to take a tour up into the towers, but we did not have enough time to do that in 2002 even though the tower Bridge Walkways have specially designed windows, which allow tourists to take photos of the views without them being obscured by glass. So when my grandson and I found ourselves at the Tower after the last Beefeater tour, we decided to do Tower Bridge. My daughter who was living in England gave us her tour booklet to read. They did the walk across the bridge. A personalized talk on the Walkways from a Tower Bridge Tour Guide is available for pre-booked groups. Prices start at £10 per guide. Admission prices for the Tower Bridge Exhibition only (good until March 2006) Adults £5.50 Children (aged five to fifteen) £3.00 Students (with identification) £4.25 Seniors (aged sixty or above) £4.25 1 Adult & 2 Children £10.00 2 Adults & 1 Child £12.00 2 Adults & 2 Children £14.00 Under fives Free For the Tower Bridge Exhibition and the Monument (joint ticket) Adults £6.50 Children (aged five to fifteen) £3.50 Students (with identification) £4.50 Seniors (aged sixty or above) £4.50 Under fives Free

  • Well, a classic thing to see, when visiting London. The Tower Bridge is impressing and rather beautiful illuminated by night. You can enter to see the engineering work inside and the principe how it was build and works.
