Tower of London: TRAITOR'S GATE

If you took the River Thames Cruise, as you passed by the Tower of London, you had to notice ENTRY TO THE TRAITOR'S GATE, which was used as the landing for the Crown's enemies. All important prisoners entered the Tower through this gate. The accompanying picture shows most of the Gate as it is low tide.

I didn't realize before I went to London that the Tower of London is actually several buildings. Upon entering, you may join in a guided tour, or grab a map and go around yourself. The Medieval Palace is the first stop, with a view of tower life in the 13th century. Stop at Traitor's Gate - as seen in "Lady Jane" - where they brought prisoners in by boat. The White Tower holds the military artifacts, such as armor, swords, and guns. (See picture - guns arranged as art!) Of course, don't miss the Crown Jewels and the resident Ravens on the Tower Green. One could easily spend the day exploring the Tower of London and its bloody history. Admission in March 2002 was 11.50 pounds.

Tower of London: Many lost their heads over this place
  • Tip Rating:
  • This London landmark is certainly one of the must see sights of London. The Crown Jewels have been housed here since the early 14th Century. Once a fortress housing the monarchs, it is best known for the people who were imprisoned and/or beheaded here. The list includes Sir Walter Raleigh, Lady Jane Grey, Anne Boleyn, Henry VI and Sir Thomas More. The ravens on the grounds are legendary in that it is said if they ever leave the Tower grounds, the British Empire will fall. One tour guide remarked, "The ravens are still here, but we are not so sure about the Empire." The Yeoman Warders are also called the Beefeaters and man the fortress and give free guided tours. There is an extra admission to see the Crown Jewels. Go early to avoid the lines for these.

  • Ah! running too short of time and I hope the reflex came took a better picture then the one I can show you here. The blue arrow indicates the Tower of London, built under William I in 11th Century (William the Conqueror, the last foreign conquerer to set foot on England's soil). The tower had had many functions during its existance. A nice explanation you can find at different websites e.g. the one of Camelot Village or the one mentioned in the general website. The Tower marked with the red arrow is called the White Tower and was built end of 11th century by William I and II.

    Tower of London: History Lesson
  • Tip Rating:
  • With over 900 years of Royal History, it's no wonder the Tower of London is England's leading historic visitor attraction. We spent hours discovering the secrets hidden within its walls!! There are Yeoman Warder tours and they tend to be VERY crowded. We opted for the audio tour (3 GBP) and it was well worth it. I recommend it for two reasons: 1. To help you learn what you are looking at. 2. To wander at your own pace. Adults 13.50 GBP Children 9.00 GBP

Our London tower tour was delightful. You can choose to wander on your own or it can be even more interesting to join in with a group led through the tower by a Beefeater. It was a great way to learn the history of the tower and some of the undertakings that went on through the years. Also, be sure to go in and see the Crown Jewels. No pictures are allowed in there, but the sights are unbelievable. Gold, diamonds, rubies and various other gems set in sceptres, crowns and tiaras. We found people around the tower who were more than happy to chat and explain things - some were workers, some were fellow tourists.

Tower of London: Norman Fortress - Tower of London
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Tower of London now guards the Crown Jewels, 900 years of history and much intrigue. Its also packed with tourists. Built to the orders of William the Conquerer in 11 Century, after his defeating of King Harold at the Battle of Hastings (1066), The Tower became the Power House of England. It began as The White Tower and was extended over the years by Edward I, becoming an impregnable prison, armoury and Safe storage of The Crown Jewels. To view the Crown Jewels, join the queue and process as on a conveyer belt, glimpsing the expensive symbols of power, like the royal Sceptre with the world's largest diamond (530 carat Stone of Africa), as you pass by. No time to stop or ponder. Nobles and Queens were imprisoned here, some beheaded, ariving through Traitor's Gate off the River Thames, leaving in a coffin. The Tower's future may rest in the nesting fancy of some birds - The Ravens (as the story goes) - but it is presently a major tourist attraction, packed with foreign tourists, and is another icon of London, of England, of Royalty and Power, Murder and Corruption. Good stuff! Home of The Beefeaters - These Yeomen Warders are now tourist attractions and tour guides, upholding myths and legend, but were originally King Henry's bodyguard and loyal protectors - maintaining their loyalty included extra rations of meat. I bet he slept with one eye open. Try to avoid the crowds. I would prefer to take it easy and not join a procession - so I would visit off-season or just see it from the outside. I can live without seeing Crown Jewels. What if they are replicas anyway? Do they hold intrinsic beauty worth queing for, or are they merely symbols of power? If so, do I need see them? Having seen them I'd answer "no" but then I went and queued and then regretted the waste of my time. There are better things to see with precious little time in London. I lived there, so had plenty. Maybe one hour for the Tower and Tower Bridge is about all you really want.

    Tower of London: Traitors' Gate

  • Entry to the Traitors Gate - London
    Entry to the Traitors Gate

A Traitor is somebody who goes against his own country or monarch. The Tower of London was a place where such people were thrown by the King to basically rot before they were executed. It was very unpleasant inside, and prisoners were often tortured before being killed in pretty inhumane circumstances. Where does this leave Traitors Gate? Well Traitors' Gate was the entrance in to the Tower that these prisoners were taken in by. You had to go in by boat, as it was an entrance from the River Thames. However the River Thames is tidal in this part of London, so as you can see in this photo (you will need to enlarge it!), traitors gate is nearly completely underwater. The entrance is just below the words "Entry to the Traitors Gate". They may as well have just written "Abandon hope all ye who enter here"...

Take the Circle or District lines (yellow or green) to the Tower Hill stop. The exit from the Underground leads right to the Tower. Admission to the Tower is ?11 for adults and includes the opportunity for two free tours. The Royal Yeoman Warders (Beefeaters) give a overview of the tower tour and also a more in depth Punishment and Prisoner tour. The standard tour leaves every thirty minutes and ARE NOT TO BE MISSED! The Beefeaters (who are retired, highly-decorated military officers) give an insightful, largely funny tour. During these tours you also gain access to the Chapel Royal of St. Peter. Other sights to be seen within the Tower include the Crown Jewels. A long queue leads you along corridors where you are shown scenes from Queen Elizabeth's cornonation and in-depth descriptions about the jewels. You can view some of the gold serveware on your own, but the actual jewels must be seen from people-movers. Because of the crowds, this is a great feature which allows you to get as close to the jewels as you are allowed without having someone standing directly in front of you. The White Tower holds an impressive collection of Royal Amouries. There are two gift shops on site and a cafeteria-style restaurant. Do walk along the River Thames on your way out of the Tower and view the amazing landmark Tower Bridge.
