 | | | | Tower of London: Every picture tells a story.... | Tip Rating: | | | | |
...but only if you know the words! Here, a seemingly mundane picture hides a fascinating tale. What you're looking for here is a small black hole in the White Tower, slightly above and to the right of centre. This, my dear friends, is the point where faecal matter used to descend, raw, into a small channel off the Thames. Designed by a bishop, Gundulf (a Norman monk) who obviously hadn't learnt much from Roman efforts several hundred years earlier, it was supposed to flush with each tide as the ditch into which the defecations went was 15ft below the high tide mark. Unlucky! In a nutshell, it didn't work and an appalling odour continually surrounded the Tower. Enough to put you off your afternoon tea I should think! Surprisingly, it's not in use today. I can't think why not. Another point of interest here is that the main stone work is done with Kentish rag, a rough limestone from close to Maidstone. Caen limestone, a finer type from Normandy was used sparingly as cut stone (ashlar) at the corners and around the windows and doors. For a standout effect, the walls were regularly whitewashed, from which act the White Tower got its name.
