    Yeoman Warders are the traditional guards of the Tower of London. They have been at the Tower since the 14th century. There are 36 of them and they live on the premises. A common name for the Yeoman Warders are the Beefeaters. They were given this name because their position allowed them to eat beef, which was not affordable by most local people during the early centuries of the Tower. The Yeoman Warders, in addition to their traditional role as Tower guards, are also the tour guides. If you have time, take a tour with them. It will be a much better experience than touring alone and they will bring the history of the Tower of London alive with some amazing stories. Our guide was very enthusiastic and did a great job. Their tours last about an hour and gives you plenty of time to explore the rest of the Tower on your own.

  • Yes it can be a bit of a tourist trap if you go when it's really busy but for a big helping of history presented in an entertaining way then it's hard to beat the Tower when in London - be sure to go on one of the beefeater tours. The crown jewels are a bit of a disappointment - hours of queueing to be whipped past them on a conveyor belt - so try to get there early to avoid the queues. Also be warned - this is not a cheap place to visit! Check out the website below for the latest ticket -rices - you can also buy the tickets in advance which is a good idea to avoid the queues in high season.

    You should definitely make it a point to see the Tower of London, which with its 900 years of history was a place for executions. Take the guided tour and see the Crown Jewels. Next on your list should be Westminster Abbey and built in 1066 it is an architectural wonder of the world. You will be amazed at the interior and exterior of this famous building. Be sure to see the Houses of Parliament with it’s 1,100 rooms, 100 staircases and11 courtyards and it houses Westminster Hall, the Crypt Church, Members' Lobby. Imaging cleaning that home? It would be quite a job. For an afternoon go to see the Science Museum and Madame Tussaud's (the famous wax museum). These two museums will be a wonderful afternoon of information and tremendous works of art. Now you are ready to see the Kensington Palace, the residence of the late Princess Diana of Wales and where Queen Victoria was born in 1819 and then the Windsor Castle where Royalty still lives now.
