Tower of London: Tower of London
  • Tip Rating:
  • I thoroughly enjoyed touring the Tower of London. The beefeaters or yeoman warders were very friendly, knowledgable, and animated in their descriptive story telling. These friendly tour guides reside here, guard the complex, and are easily noticable because of their bright red and black uniforms. Lots of stories to tell here. There are areas in the tower that display torture devices used upon felons in the good old days. Not very nice looking gadgets at all. When people were sentenced to death, their sentence was execution on Tower Hill, where they were put on public display. More favoured prisoners, like people of noble blood, were executed here in the tower on a large patch of grass known as the Tower Green. There is also a legend behind the ravens that reside here. At all times, there must be a total of 7 ravens, should they desert the tower, the legend claims that the kingdom of England will fall. After all the story telling has ended, be sure not to miss the famed crown jewels that are housed here in the Jewel House. If you want to see magnificent and stunning pieces of jewelry, you won't be dissappointed.

    Tower of London: The Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • London's seemingly ever-present bastion. Started by William Conqueror at the dawn of England's new Norman age. The site of much butchery and bloodshed through the centuries. An integral of Britain's royal history. Sitting majestically beside the Thames and continually guarding the Crown Jewels. When visiting be patient enough to wait for the guided tour given by the Yeoman as this is an enjoyable education and introduction to one of the world's great castles.

Tower of London: The Tower of London ~ East Tower & 'The Jewels'!
  • Tip Rating:
  • This tower is to me, the most impressive of all. Towering above you, it is beautiful and has a certain presence. It has a lovely clock right above the main entrance, which stands out quite a way. I love London’s clocks. Before going into the East Tower, you might be fortunate enough to see The Changing of the Guards. This takes place to the left of the main door of this Tower. Inside the Tower there is a room where you trace the genealogy of Queen Elizabeth II, you then move into a room that is showing a continuous video of her inaugeration 50 odd years ago… they have these zigzag-type banisters in place for crowd control. There are a couple of similar rooms and then you come to the room with the crowns :) This is very interesting! They display the actual crowns of all the previous Queens and Kings. I have been twice and always marvel. The second time we went (20 May 2006) we actually went along the conveyor belt - this is how you view the crowns - twice! Queen Victoria’s crown is my personal favourite – it is small and petite and is adorned with diamonds, no velvet or anything ostentatious, as most of the others are prone to being. You then go into a room where they display a couple of royal gowns and celebration elements and implements – bowls etc. They are all solid gold and the decadence of it hit me quite hard. The cost of a few of those items would probably cancel out the debt of a small African nation. Makes you think, doesn’t it? An interesting titbit of information (given by one of the guards when we were last there), is that the two security men who are in charge of the Crown Jewels are the highest paying individuals in the Tower of London. This makes sense though, as what they are responsible for are uninsurable in value, and there are attempts to steal them! As you exit the Tower there is a little jewel shop where you can buy little items and souvenirs.

Tower of London: The Tower of London ~ The Chapel and the Residence
  • Tip Rating:
  • I was pleasantly surprised when I came into this tower. You climb up some wooden steps (they were wood so that if the enemy wanted to gain entry,, they could set them alight so the enemy couldn’t gain entry into the entrance way above them. You walk into a cool chapel, and it is gorgeous. The sun streams into the chapel through small windows and stained glass windows. It is intimate and sits perhaps 50 or 60 people. No huge detail or design, it is quite stark, but this somehow feels right to me. It is very peaceful. You then walk into the area where their residence was when they lived in the castle during war times. They don’t have furnished rooms, they only have a shell of a hall to show you, with the Norman fireplaces still visible, and information re what happened in the hall you are in.

Tower of London: The Tower of London ~ Some history
  • Tip Rating:
  • It was built William I of England (more well known as William the Conqueror 1066-87) a mere 3 months after he had taken the throne, and is today, one of the most well preserved castles in the world. In its 900 year history it has been extended to and added onto time and time again, with new walls, walkways and buildings. Visitors flock through its gates on a daily basis, there is a lot to see and do inside, and plenty of help at hand to make your visit as enjoyable as possible. Until you actually go inside one doesn’t realise just how very big it is! Some of its fine traditions include: Ceremony of the Keys – I have written a tip about this here It invites visitors to join them in locking up the castle at 10pm at night. The Beating of the Bounds – This celebration takes place on Ascension Day. It has been going on since AD 1555. Willow wands are distributed amongst the people in the group, and the beating of the bounds commences. More info on the website below. The Ceremony of the Lillies and Roses – King Henry VI was murdered in 1471. His birthday is still remembered and celebrated with this ceremony. They call it Founders Day and 2 Kings Scholars of Eton lay a bunch of white lilies on his tomb. This has been going on since 1905. More info on the website below.

Tower of London: The Crown Jewels
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Crown Jewels are truly the highlight of the Tower of London (which isn't actually a tower, but a large complex) When you enter the Jewel Tower, you immediately see it was designed with a wait time in mind. You weave through the building in order to get through to the jewels. When you are walking through, you do feel a sense of importance and sentiment towards the jewels as they show well-made mini-movies. One features the Queen when she was being coronated in the 50's, as well as a program about the jewels themselves. The programs were very touching and gave me more of a feel for what I was about to see. When I got to the jewels, I was not disappointed. The display is set up around a moving walkway, which allows everyone to see the jewels in a timely manner (We all know and fear the "museum hog" who always has the best position to the attraction and blocks everyone else from seeing) If you are lucky and there isn't a massive cue, you can go back around for a second or third view. The security guards are very nice and will answer any questions you may have, they'll even humor you when you ask to try on the crown. Overall, the crown jewels truly are the Jewels of The Tower of London, and a must-see while there.

Tower of London: The Tower of London
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Tower of London is the most visited and best known of England's castles. Many people recognize it as a prison, however the Tower has served numerous purposes including palace, garrison, treasury, fortress and execution site since its construction around 1078. It has housed the Crown Jewels of England for the past 600 years. The Tower of London is actually a concentric-type castle and by the 13th century, it had more or less the form it has today. The inner (built by Richard I and Henry II) and outer wards (built by Edward I) are separated by two fortified curtain walls and the entire complex is encircled by a deep moat. The irregular, square outer wall is divided from its counterpart by a narrow lane. 13 separate towers make up the Norman fortress, including the centrally located White Tower, which likely gave the castle its name. Tower Wharf stands between the moat and the River Thames. In all the castle encompasses 84 acres of land.

  • This is an unforgettable tour back into the history of English kings, queens, pretenders to the thrones and murders. The official tour guides - the traditional yeomen, called "Beefeaters" in their resplendent archaic outfit, tell tales of beheading, midnight assasinations all for the seat of the throne and the right to rule the kingdom. Saw the black ravens still there. Apparently if they were to leavee, legend had it, that the crown will fall. Particularly liked the exhibition of the royal crown jewels - the sparkling gems, diamonds, sapphires, rubies and precious stones passed down or confiscated from other rules all the over the British empire. Check out the St. Edwards Crown (since 1661 AD) won by Queen Elizabeth during her majesty coronation in 1953. Was amazed by collected of metallic shining armour of knights and for the horses.

A very, very old tower that once housed the Kings and Queens of England. Anne Bolyen was beheaded here and this is where the story of the Princes in the Tower (the murdered twins) comes from. Has a ton of other history for you to sample on a great day out or just enjoy the grounds, chat with the Beefeaters (a wealth of knowledge!), watch the mini pantos by performers (you can sometimes even get involved) but keep your distance from the ravens! the White Tower is the huge square one in the centre of the grounds and you can also visit Traitors Gate and St. Martin's tower among other parts of the fortress. A good family day out - I still learn heaps and have been there three times!
