The Yeomen Warders of Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London are known as the Beefeaters. They are ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London. In principle they are responsible for looking after any prisoners at the Tower and safeguarding the British crown jewels but nowthey act as tour guides.

Tower of London: The Tower of London (Amazing History)
  • Tip Rating:
  • So much history in this beautiful tower that was built over 800 years ago!! Whooa!! We were so lucky this time that Dennis booked our tickets in advance and it came out to be much cheaper, I believe around 10 or 11 Pounds, but do make sure cause prices can vary depending on booking times and status. What is so awsome though is that it's open everyday woot woot!!! The history you will see here about the royalty of the kingdom and much more is fantastic and I definitely recommend to all, be sure to attend!

Tower of London: Yeomen of the Guard
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Tower of London was built by the Norman William the Conquerer after he defeated Harold, and some of the walls are 15 feet thick. There have been a lot of executions at the tower, and there are a lot of stories told about it - some of which are true. This is definitely something on most people's list of things to do. We did see it on our first trip in 1950, and we had our pictures taken with one of the Guards. I was not particularly interested this time in the Crown Jewels or a tour of the Tower (I remembered that and it wasn't free and takes a long time). I was somewhat put off seeing it this time by the need to stand in line for long periods of time. I don't do lines well. So the end result was - we did not go. When one of my daughters visited her sister in England, the sister took care of the baby on the lawn outside where the ravens are while they stood in line to see the Crown Jewels. I don't think it is a particularly venue for younger children to tour. When I took my 14 year old grandson to London in 2007, I did think that this was one thing he should see, so we took one of the Beefeater's tours. He was impressed with the Crown Jewels, and wanted to know why the Queen didn't wear them more often. There are replicas of the Crown Jewels in Fort St. Catherine, St. George, Bermuda

After my big walk in Hyde Park, I decided to visit the Tower. So I took the underground to Tower Hill. From there it is only a short walk to the Tower. The Tower is the best preserved medieval fortress of the Nation. I is surely worth to visit this historical site, because of its long and bloody history and also because you can see the crown jewels over here. This must be London’s most fearful building, but before it was used as a prison it was the Royal residence. At first it was built as a fortress with a castle moat, it was built by William the Conqueror in 1080. Later on it was extended and it was used to house the weapon arsenal, the Crown Jewels and the Royal Mint. In the Tower there were only executed 7 persons, but more then 300 were executed at Tower Hill, just outside the Tower.

At the first floor of the White Tower you can visit the Chapel of St John the Evangelist. This Chapel is also built by William the Conqueror, and it is the oldest chapel in London. And it is a good example of original Norman architecture.

    Tower of London: The Raven
  • Tip Rating:
  • Do not get frightened when you see some ravens while visiting the Tower. These ravens are the most popular inhabitants of the Tower. Already since the reign of Charles II there have always been at least six ravens in the Tower. There is a Rave master who is taking care of these black birds. There is an old story which tells if one day the raven would leave the Tower well then that would mean the end of the Tower and even of the Nation. Maybe that is why these birds are well treated. And in fact it is a bit tricky, as these birds wings are cut on one side, so it is impossible to fly away. Do not worry the cutting of the wing is painless. You can see the cutted wing on the picture.

Tower of London: Roman city walls
  • Tip Rating:
  • In order to visit the Tower of London, I took the subway till Tower Hill. On the way to the Tower, coming from Tower Hill, you must pass through a tunnel which is decorated with all kind of colourful paintings which represent the history of London and England. If you walk this way, you will also see some remains of a Roman city wall. This Roman city wall is built between 190 and 225 after Christ and was 5 km long, 8 m high and 2 m thick. In front of the Roman wall you see a statue of a roman Emperor (sorry, but I can not remember his name).

    Tower of London: Royal Armouries
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the White Tower you can also see one of the biggest collections of arms and armouries in the world. You can see pieces from the medieval time till 1914. There are magnificent armours, like this German horse armour which dates from the 15th century.

Tower of London: The White Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the middle of the inner courtyard, there is the White Tower. At first it was a Royal Palace, built by William the Conqueror in 1078. In that period the White Tower was the highest building of London (30 m). Around 1240 the external walls were whitewashed, so this tower got its name. Later on this tower was used as a fortress and arsenal of weapons and armours, and even as an observatory. Nowadays you can see the collections of the Royal Armouries in the White Tower. There is also a beautiful Chapel, on the lower floor; near the exit is a souvenir shop.

It is surely worth to use the spiral staircase to go to the first floor. On this first floor you can see inscriptions and drawings made in the prison walls. Let’s call it Medieval graffiti. There is a book which explains all the different signs and writings. I found this really interesting.
