Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Why? Oh why come to London, queue all round the block, and pay good money to see wax statues of celebrities and historical figures. It may be clever, it may be popular, but you surely have better things to do with your time and money - like watching real living people! It costs 20 or 25 pounds per adult.

Take a box of matches ;-)

Try Life. Give a few pounds to someone who needs it more than you, buy yourself a picnic, some nice food and wine or beer, go sit in one of the Parks, feed the ducks, have fun, and have money to spare. They will still be queuing after you've done all this. (The same is true for many tourist attractions!!!). Choose Life

If you don't want to waste time waiting in line
  • Tip Rating:
  • Check out the photo of the line of tourist waiting to go into the Tower of London! The line stretches right back to the ticket office & ends at the Tower Gates. It takes a lot of time to explore the Tower of London, so make the most of your time & don't waste it standing in line.

Avoid School holidays & be an early bird - go just before opening

If you are stuck in line try a guessing game & listen to your fellow tourist & play spot the language

Yes, this is both the thing to do, and the thing not to do. I happened to be walking by at the right moment and caught the boys in action. There is so much to do in London without standing for an hour watching men in big hats.

Pass by around 11AM and get a peek, then continue on through St. James Park to Trafalgar Square.

Not only was the London Dundgeon not worth our time or money but we got caught by the photographer. Before you get to enter the attraction they immediately stop you and have you pose here for a picture. Even though we were disappointed with the entire experience we still could not pass up the fun picture. Looking back now maybe it wasn't as bad as I originally thought.

    Ticket touts (theatre and concerts)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Outside a lot of the theatres and concert venues you'll see people asking to buy or sell tickets. Unless you're desperate to see the show dont' buy from these people. they sell tickets to make a profit, therefore a £20 ticket will cost you about 80 depending on the show. especially at concerts its best to wait until later if you're going to buy them because then they will be trying to get rid of the tickets because they're no good to them, so you may get it cheaper than the actual price. The other upside of this is that the scumbags won't make any money. I particularly hate these people for one reason, they stop real fans or customers getting tickets so that they can sell them at a higher price and make money for doing nothing. I have no problem paying more for a ticket as long as i know it's going to the performers or the theatre, but i don't believe that these people should be making money by taking advantage of people that actually want the tickets. I have been to a concert before, which was about half full but the venue had sold out, all because the ticket touts realised that the band playing had a huge following and sold out the last venue. so they bought all the tickets and most people saw that it was sold out and didn't bother even trying to get the tickets...

wait til very close to the start of the performance, they may sell you the ticket cheaper than it's face value because they will just have a worthless piece of paper if they hold onto it.

book early by phone or on ticketmaster.co.uk or if you want a cheap ticket get to leicester square and head to the south end of the little park there, there's a box office selling late deals and matinee tickets

    Anything it's famous for
  • Tip Rating:
  • And of course- the Damn Tube - London
And of course- the Damn Tube

Maybe the same in other cities, but I'm particularly aware of how bad the most famous spots are becoming. Covent Garden- Jammed full of tourists- only. Except of course the street "theatre"- living statues copied from Barcelona and so on. Picadilly- What's to see? The lights? Let down. Trocadero? You are joking aren't you? Oxford Street- NO NO NO NO- Boots, Dixons and Virgin Megastore again and again and again, only broken by "fashion" outlet stores.

I tease you, these spots are pretty bad like that, but there are a few exceptions of course. Buck House, not too bad. The Tower, yes, it's real, if BUSY. St Pauls and Westminster are both very impressive. (Big up to Chris Wren!). And best of all is that right near the worst of those criminal hotspots is Trafalgar Square- not in itself so great, but the National Gallery and Portrait Gallery are right there. (And so is Euston- Escape!).

The South Bank of The Thames is a very pleasant walk and of course the Tate Galleries are down that way while you're at it.

All show and no substance.....a flimsy creation.
  • Tip Rating:
  • FTM - the Fashion and Textile Museum opened last year (2003) in Bermonsey. I visited recently (March 2004), but was very disappointed by the place. The Museum building itself, in it's striking primary (i.e Nursery) colours was probably the best thing about the whole place. Inside , the ill-lit black box contains about 60-70 dresses to view, suspended from mannequins. I had rather hoped there would be some sort of 'interpretation' with videos, artefacts and suchlike showing how fashion changed as culture developed throughout the 20th century - thus setting it within it's social context. Unless you are student of fashion - then the place holds little interest (despite the advertising) for the more general tourist with a passing interest. At six quid a head it is very overpriced, but then again I should have expected that - Sourbugger is always amazed at how much some women will pay for 19 square centimeters of material and a couple of safety pins. Address (if you ignore my advice !) : Fashion and Textile Museum 83 Bermondsey Street London SE1 3XF Tel: 020 7403 0222 / 020 7407 8664 UPDATE 2008 - Now re-opened after 'restructuring' . seven quid entry (if you like wasteing it)

At least get a discount voucher from somewhere like www.visitlondon.com to justify a short visit.

    1) Wait a few years to see if the place expands dramatically 2) See the displays in places like the Victoria & Albert Museum.

    Souvenirs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Yes, we all know them, the various stores that are seemingly everywhere selling everything from 49 pence London ashtrays, to the giant Gold Painted Big Ben's. When you are in need of a postcard, or a pair of boxer shorts with the union jack, you have no choice but to go inside.

I discovered something fantastic...be nice! I waked into a souvenir stand in Marble Arch, and began talking and joking with the staff. The men running the shop were very helpful and made sure to assist me, even when I didn't really need assistance. Once I began looking at t-shirts and going, "Oh, gee, I don't know..." That is when they started bargaining with me. You read correctly: they will barter. Most of the stands are run privately, and if you stand your ground and BEHAVE yourself, they will be more than happy to make a deal with you to get your business. I saw people come in and try to be vicious and steadfast about trying to strike a bargain, it DID NOT WORK. If you try and negotiate with a smile and a friendly attittude, you'll find that it works in your favor.

    ticket touts (trains)
  • Tip Rating:
  • there will be people at about 5pm everyday asking for your travelcard tickets... they will sell these on to other people, but more to the point it's actually illegal for you to give them the ticket so don't do it

just do what all londoners do and ignore them...

    Leicester Square
  • Tip Rating:
  • Its Leicester Square , everything is designed to seperate you from your money as quickly as possible. Overpriced show tickets ,reheated pizza slices ,planet hollywood ,riduculous bar prices at the zoo bar ,the hippodrome, mobile phone snatchers

Leg it off down the back streets and go and have a wander round Soho.

Leicester Squares only there for the tourists so burn off into Soho and find some trouble to get into. You never know you might even meet some real people.
