Again, neither of these sites are really a tourist trap if youre interests are either history or politics, but they are heavily trafficked...

Pay attention to what is going on in the moments that you are there...This part of London strongly reflects the daily climate. Newspapers, protests, and displays abound and I find heeding this information more valuable than waiting on line at Big Ben, but that is just me...

    Oxford St
  • Tip Rating:
  • Avoid the bottom end of Oxford Street / Tottenham Court Road. Its nasty and dirty and the shops are full of over-priced tat. Try not to trip over the beggars!

If you are in that area and are looking for a decent restaurant (or if you have been to see a show at the Dominion), carry on further up Tottenham Crt Road and turn left into Goodge Street by the Tube Station (about 10 minutes walk). There are a number of good places along Charlotte Street and you won't have to dodge beggars and drunks etc. (Thai Metro was pretty good last time I went)

This is a real tourist trap in my opinion. I had purchased a London Card for Danielle and I before our trip. I would recommend this to all tourists going to London. You get lots of savings and at many place do not have to wait in line if you have a London Card. They can be purchased on line before your trip. One of the items on the card was The London Dundgeon. We only went here because it was on the card and we had a nice discount. So we thought it would be a good idea.

    The London Dungeon (part 2)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Well it was not such a good idea. It was a very long and slow walk through the exhibit. It was also very crowded in our group and it got very warm inside the exhibit. There are so many real places to visit and see in London that it is really a waste of time to spend almost an hour inside this Disney World like theme exhibit.

    Double-decker price
  • Tip Rating:
  • A good way to get your bearings if it's your first time in London is to jump on the famous double-decker bus tours. But, for those traveling on a budget, the £15.00 charge for these automated (not live guided) tours can be a little steep.

Try to find a tour with a live guide. The tinny audio records are horrible to listen to for hours as you're stuck in traffic. If you do go, of course you must sit up top!

Buy an Underground map and orient yourself to the nearest Tube stations. You'll spend only about £5.00 on an all-day ticket (only £6.00 for the whole weekend) and be able to see all the famous sites at your own pace.

  • Madame Tusaud's wax museum is overpriced and over rated. Yes, it's fun to visit, but I expected several hours of entertainment of the price of the ticket, whereas I'd seen everything within 2 hours.

Look at the web site first: http://www.madame-tussauds.com/site/london/frontdoor.htm. Tickets are cheaper for admission later in the day. The planetarium was the best part, but I don't think you can do it alone

There is a lot you can do in London for £20 ($30) for an adult ticket!

    London sightseeing buses
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dont be a sheep... These things are an extrodinary rip-off. They are often 15 quid or more for a ticket and the quality of the commentary is variable to say the least. Some don't even have a live guide - but a rather anodine and formulaic tape. They market themselves as a time-saving service and one that will save you money by not having to fork out for transport between the things you want to visit. This also amounts to false advertising in my book. Baa baa.

Only do this if you are making a flying visit and only have a few hours. That way you can take in the entire route and get an overview of the city. Baa baa.

Quite simply the London bus pass is an exceptional bargain at only 3 pounds 50 p, will get you everywhere and you can use it in the evening. Route 11, inparticular will connect up many of the poiunts of interest or RV1(see transport tips) that is specifically designed to connect up central London tourist destinations. As a half way house compromise look at City cruises who operate a hop on-off service to Greenwich in tandem with the Docklands light railway (DLR) for about 9 quid.

    Harrods
  • Tip Rating:
  • Harrod's Egyptian Escalator - London
    Harrod's Egyptian Escalator

Yes, Harrod's! Oh it's a lovely department store and you can get pretty much anything you want there. But it's VERY expensive. The food halls are an attraction but Fortnum and Mason has just as good. The cafes are pricey (but, ok, the food is pretty good). The whole store is so big and it's difficult to find things with various different escalators and lifts around corners and then walking through many departments to get to the one you want or to a cafe. http://www.harrods.com

They do have some lesser priced items like their own brand tea and coffee and they have some reasonably priced Christmas decorations in the fall. The food halls are interesting to look through, the Egyptian escalator are is worth a look as well though it does also have the Diana/Dodi memorial shrine at the bottom.

Fortnum and Mason's on Piccadilly is an equally nice (and expensive) department store with a good food hall and nice cafes and far less crowded. Fortnum's was founded in 1707, more than 150 years before Harrod's. F&M also supplies the Royal Household by Royal Warrant which Harrod's does not have anymore so if it's prestige you want, it's there too. You can also order goods online at Fortnum's just as you can Harrod's so you aren't losing out there either. http://www.fortnumandmason.com

    OXO Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • Many visitors like to go for a drink at the bar of the OXO tower as it's a fashionable hang out ,however despite overcharging for the drinks the like to tack on a extra fiver for " bar snacks " which are the little bowls of nuts on the bar even if you haven't had any.

Eat everything on the bar ,the second they put a new bowl out ,eat the bloody lot.

Go somewhere that doesn't despise the paying public so much that they feel the need to rip you off.

    Hop on Hop off buses
  • Tip Rating:
  • I didn't go much for these sightseeing tour buses. They were popular though as each one was always full, and they were everywhere. Somehow the 20 pound ticket didn't seem worth it.

As an alternative I chose buying an all day underground ticket. This enabled me to go anywhere all day from 9am. A tip here is to get there before nine as there will be long lineups. This ticket also allows you to travel the buses for free. So for only 4.60 pound it was a real bargain.
