 | London Transportation | Tips 1851 - 1860 of 1906 | | The tube is the name used for the underground network in London. It's easy to remember. The tube is the fastest way to get around because of the traffic on the streets. And it's easy to use also, the system of the tube network is very clever - each line has a name and a color - you identify the color and the name and then you look for signs to that line. Interesting fact to look for: bars you grab onto inside the trains are painted like the color of the line. Then the direction of the ride is as shown on the map, eastbound - to the east right, westbound - to the left, northbound - up the map, southbound - down the map. So you have a small tube map ready - you can find one (one line shown in my second picture) in all underground stations - if finished just ask at the counter - and you can easily work your way from one station to another. When you're inside stations the maps on the walls and in trains are verey readable and easy to understand. Stations are abundant (numerous) - not quite as numerous as in Paris - but with the tube you can go wherever you like without having to walk more than 15 minutes after you get to the surface. The tube, though it may be a bit confusing for first time users, is by far the best fastest way to get around London. It's also pretty fast and you'll never be waiting in the station for long. You can get just about anywhere for cheap, but sometimes it can be quite crowded. I tried to avoid it at rush hours, but when I couldn't we were packed in so tight it was hard to tell where one person ended and the next one began. Oh, and for God's sake - MIND THE GAP! I absolutely love taking the tube in London. It is super easy to use, the employees are all super nice, and somehow they are able to keep it all relatively clean. AND the best part is that there are plenty of elevators and escalators in the stations so that I can easily get a stroller in and out. The bad news: Considering the conversion rate, the price of riding the tube is kind of high (at least compared to other cities like Paris), but the service you get is worth the price. Also, you may notice extreme pollution from the cars inside the stations.

I find "The Tube" (London Underground) is an excellent way to sprint around the various areas of central London & also to travel between the centre of London & many of its suburbs.

London has an extensive underground covering most of the city centre. There are numerous transit points to the regional trains (Including the Victoria, London Brigde, Waterloo, Paddington and Liverpool street stations). There are a lot of possibilities for different tickets. I got a dayticket for £6, but I think the price for there tickets also differs. Theme: Subway/Metro

The London Underground (Metro / Subway), known locally as the Tube or sometimes the Rattler, is a relatively quick way to travel around London, although it is not without it's problems, as any Londoner will tell you. Here are just a couple of tips to help you on your travels, should you decide to use it. Firstly, try and avoid rush hour i.e. between about 0730 and 0930 in the morning and about 1630 and 1830 in the evneings. Trains can be extremely crowded and unpleasant, especially in hot weather. It's also a good idea to have a bottle of water with you if the weather is hot, as Tubes can actually reach temperatures that would be illegal to transport livestock in, would you believe? This applies even moreso if you have a lot of luggage with you. The main picture gives you some ides of a typical rush hour train. Secondly, whilst waiting to get on a train, let the passengers off first. Thirdly, don't hold the doors open or obstruct them as this will delay the train and is very annoying for everybody else. The same thing applies to lift doors in the stations. Lastly, and possibly most important is the escalators. You will find that people stand on the right, and those in more of a hurry walk up the left of the escalator. Please don't stand on the left side talking to your friend as it really annoys people. Hope this assists. Leave a Comment Theme: Subway/Metro

The London Underground is a metro railway system in England that covers much of the conurbation of Greater London and some neighbouring areas. It is the world's oldest underground system, and is the largest in terms of route length. The Underground is an electric railway and currently serves 275 stations and runs over 408 km (253 miles) of lines. There are also a number of former stations and tunnels that are now closed. The Tube is London's metro system and the tub map has been heralded as one of the greatest pieces of Graphic design in the UK... the map orginally showed all the stations as they appear on the map, which confused people so much that they had to simplify it... however if you're walking around london using a tube map will point you in the general direction of where you want to go. The tube can get confusing, just make note of the colour of line you want to take, and when you get off the train look for that colour above head height. For a printable copy of the whole tubemap go to... www.tubemap.co.uk it's by far the most simple and easy way to get around but it does get very hot down there... the vitorian subway system means that there isn't enough space to fit air con in there. Oh and mobile phones don't work down there, after polling a number of people they found that people on the tube would be 70% more likely to commit suicide if they did allow mobiles to be used... however due to security reasons they may fit this soon anyway.
