by Pierre_Rouss The train is one of the best way to get in London from the subburbs. I was living near Reading and would be in London downtown in about 40 minutes, avoiding the traffic and parking problems. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

I had a 4-day brit rail pass and of the 8 journeys i took (up and back total) all but one was late...and the one that wasn't late -- a return trip from Bath to London on a Saturday -- had no food service because not all the employees showed up that day. The trains were all at least an hour late EVERY time! It was nice to see the country side, but if you are at all pressed for time, beware of the trains! Leave a Comment Theme: Train

I have family close to London and I still take advantage of the train system instead of cars. Because of traffic congestion in and around London, besides getting used to driving on the other side of the road and small country lanes, its safer, quicker, and more economical to use the trains. Buy your tickets BEFORE you leave the United States as they give special deals that you cannot get in the UK. London Day Out passes are the least expensive and allow day trips out of London to beautiful places plus transport to the airports. If my family picks me up from the airport, it takes 2 to 3 hours, while the train takes 1 hour! Theme: TrainWebsite: britrail.com

Just got back from London and I have to say the Underground is NOT the best transportation system Ive seen and used. Granted, Ive lived mostly in NYC so Im a bit spoiled, but Ive also lived in Paris and Italy and travelled extensively so Ive seen what else is out there. London's underground is usually packed, expensive, and SLOW!!! Sometimes I felt like I could walk the distance faster. I ended up taking cabs everywhere just to save time, which cost me a fortune. This site is becoming quite famous for its campaign against unfair bank charges, but it also has some excellent tips on how to get the most out of the byzantine railway system. The UK has some of the most expensive rail tickets in the world. The many operating companies on the UK rail network practice a kind of confusion marketing. They try to hide and restrict cheaper tickets and then give people that only the most expensive are available when you come to buy. At the same time they trumpet news of all kinds of promotions to get you sold on the idea first. The theory is that a competitive market provides the greatest choice and the most efficient delivery of services. This is true as long as the customer works hard at evaluating all that is on offer....you can spend your life doing that. Luckily on the internet there is strength in numbers and people can share the task. We went to take the train to Windsor Castle and it took a while for us to get to the appropriate station and train area. We ended up missing the train because we were on the wrong side of the tracks so make sure that when you get your ticket that you ask where it is going to be exactly and if it will be on time. Ours was delayed and then it was switched to a different train so we got mixed up trying to watch the screens and figure out where we were supposed to go.Give yourself enough time to get your ticket and find the appropriate area to be in.
