I really stood gazing at this jam can ! I think it is a marvelous warning tip. I could not help but to make a picture of it. Honour to the one who desinged this poster! It is a great mixture of visual and lingual humour providing a deadly serious warning given with a whink.

Look right, then left when crossing the street

    Look Right, Look Left

I'm sure a few American tourists have narrowly escaped being flattened by a big red bus by ignoring the signs printed on the street telling them to Look Right then Look Left. Alternatively, you can just look in both directions like we did just to make sure nothing is coming to flatten you. Perhaps that's from years of experience with bike messengers in Chicago who never travel in the right direction.

If your easily offended - avoid public phone boxes
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is an almost unbelieveable fact that you can be fined Five Thousand pounds or spend six months in jail, for placing advertising in an telephone box. Despite this threat some 13 Million "Tart cards" are placed in London's phone boxes annually. The history of them in fact goes back to Music hall days, when 'Ladies of the night' would leave little envelopes for likely punters. In the old days discreet messages would appear in newsagents advertising "Swedish lessons" or "Large Chest for sale", but gradually the Tart Card ended up in the capitals Phone boxes. Some are still discreet with phrases like "Model available" but most are much more on the risque side with various salacious images downloaded from the net. So if your easily offended,or have kids who you don't wish to see such images then be warned.

Speed cameras - lots of them
  • Tip Rating:
  • Speed camera and warning sign - London
    Speed camera and warning
    sign

If you are driving you need to be aware that there are lots of speed cameras in London, and also in many other parts of the UK. However the good news is that due to a rather bizarre law, a fixed speed camera needs to painted in bright luminous colours to stand out so that drivers can see it. Road signs warning of the camera also need to be posted up. In this picture you can see the warning sign, the speed limit (this is in miles an hour - 30 mph is approx 50 km/h). There is a little bit of leeway, but only a little so don't chance it! Penalty is a fine and points on your license, although if you are from abroad you may not get the points. The other thing to be aware of is that most speed cameras photograph you once you have gone past them. There are also extra clues as they paint white lines on the road every foot or so. This is used as a extra check as 2 pictures are taken with a fixed delay between the two, and the distance travelled can also be measured should there be any dispute.

    Shell games
  • Tip Rating:
  • This warning could apply to virtually anywhere in the world, I seem to see this particular con virtually everywhere we go and can't believe that there are still people who fall for this centuries old con. We happened to see this in broad daylight near Covent Garden on our last visit. The basic equipment is three shells and a round object such as a pea, the con man has his ringer (always shifty looking fellows) pick the winning shell with the pea under it a couple of times, oohs and aahs come from the crowd and then the con man starts taking bets from unsuspecting tourists and taking their money in this sleight of hand. A third conman is usually posted as a lookout, the game is always ready to travel upon the appearance of local law enforcement. Another variation on this is three card monte, anytime you see a man with shells or cards on a paper box, feel free to watch from a safe distance but never ever plunk your money down, it's a sucker bet and you are sure to lose.

    traffic hazards
  • Tip Rating:
  • the traffic in london is quite chaotic, and one has to remember that cars drive on the opposite side of the road to the USA and Europe. during my time in london i've seen a man die when get hit by a bus, a motorcyclists get knocked off by an ambulance as the ambulance was rushing to a scene and numerous other dangerous things, like this major accident that blocked the road out to hammersmith. traffic was backed up for miles!!!

    phone box in London

It is extremely common in London to see phone boxes that are covered in cards (together with pictures) for various women advertising their services. People are employed to go around these phone boxes and remove all of these cards. I have seen these people in action, and then minutes later seen a women appear and promptly plaster up another whole set of cards. I guess it is a bit of a losing battle. Whilst most adults won't be offended and will just ignore them (OK I guess not ALL ignore them as otherwise they wouldn't be there), but you may want to check out a phonebox first before you send your kids inside one.

If you are in a hurry
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are in a hurry, avoid getting stuck in the heavy traffic in the centre of the city. Not every where busses have their own lanes and with a cab you get as stuck in traffic as with your own car. I think easiest way still is the tube, although that can be very crowded too! I once took the tube during rush hour and when I closed my eyes I swear I felt like a canned sardine!

Your not going to believe this one...
  • Tip Rating:
  • A friend of mine recently told me there is a species of scorpion which lives only in the Underground system. I'm not sure whether to believe him or not. What I do know is that if you have a problem with dust or rats, then you might well want to give the tube a skip. APOLOGY : I thought that the following report was true - yes, I was suckered in. Another VT member e-mailed me to point out the forensic dept that alledgedly compiled the following report, does not in fact exist. Even if it is a hoax - the point that it SOUNDS plausible and makes you think ! "During Autumn of 2000, a team of scientists at the Department of Forensics at University College London removed a row of passenger seats from a Central Line tube carriage for analysis into cleanliness. Despite London Underground's claim that the interior of their trains are cleaned on a regular basis, the scientists made some alarming discoveries. The analysis was broken down. This is what was found on the surface of the seats: . 4 types of hair sample (human, mouse, rat, dog) . 7 types of insect (mostly fleas, mostly alive) . vomit originating from at least 9 separate people . human urine originating from at least 4 separate people . human excrement . rodent excrement . human semen When the seats were taken apart, they found: the remains of 6 mice . the remains of 2 large rats . 1 previously unheard of fungus It is estimated that by holding one of the armrests, you are transferring, to your body, the natural oils and sweat from as many as 400 different people. It is estimated that it is generally healthier to smoke five cigarettes a day than to travel for one hour a day on the London Underground. It is far more hygienic to wipe your hand on the inside of a recently flushed toilet bowl before eating, than to wipe your hand on a London Underground seat before eating. It is estimated that, within London, more work sick-days are taken because of bugs picked up whilst travelling on the tube than for any other reason (including alcohol)."

Once upon a time Trafalgar Square used to be chock full of pigeons. Nelson on top of his column was covered in white gunge (I wonder where that came from!) and the floor of the Square was like a skating rink as you slipped around in the same white gunge that was on top of Nelson. There used to be sellers selling seeds to feed the pigeons with. These days it is forbidden to feed pigeons. They have been likened to flying rats as they carry lots of infections around with them. There aren't so many pigeons in London anymore, and we like it that way, please don't feed them and encourage more excrement!
