Be careful when crossing the road
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you as a pedestrian is used to right-hand traffic it might be dangerous to cross the road in UK were they have left-hand traffic. The good thing though is that on most places in London you can just read on the road to see in which direction to look before crossing the road.

Watch your pockets on Oxford Street.

    You gotta pick a pocket
    or two...

If you've ever read Dickens or seen the musical 'Oliver!' then you will know that pickpocketing has been part of London life for a very long time. Having said that, London does not have a pickpocketing problem on the scale of other major tourist destinations such as Barcelona, for example. If it is going to happen anywhere, then it will happen on Oxford street. Despite CCTV cameras covering the place the crowds, the warren of streets off to the sides and the tangle of street furniture allow gangs of pickpocketers to operate with comparative freedom. Keep your money well buried. Alternatively use an old wallet and leave that in your pocket, with you money buried elsewhere. Then fill it with bits of paper, preferably with a rude message. If you are then pickpocketed, you can take great pleasure in imagining the look on their faces when the wallet is searched !

Your still liable for the congestion charge...damn
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you drive a car into central London (see map) or hire a car, then you are liable to pay Uncle Ken's congestion charge. It operates Monday-Friday in the day and costs EIGHT QUID a day. (7AM - 6PM) There are several ways of paying it - so look at the listed website. Some car hire companies like Easycar collect the charge on your behalf - but you must declare to them the days you use it, or you will face some pretty large fines ; and remember that they have your credit card details. UPDATE: (FEB 07). Many websites on this matter are now out of date. the size of the zone has been doubled to include most of the expensive addreses of west london - Knightsbridge, Pimlico and Chealsea etc. That's the way - EAT THE RICH.

    Taxi's
  • Tip Rating:
  • In England there are very strict criteria set for people driving taxi's. Generally more expensive black "Cabs" are the safest and best way to get around as they can seat 5 people with luggage and the drivers have to take a test called "the knowledge" which basically means memorising all the streets in london and working out the fastest ways of getting a person to their destination. there are also mini cabs (check for the hackney carriage licence on the back of the car, which you cannot hail, only call and book one, or go into taxi rank to get them. The final form of taxi is the illegal minicab driver, you'll see them hanging around area's asking people if they want a taxi etc... or they'll pull over to you as if you've hailed them and try and get business this way. Many of these drivers are trying to make a living, which isn't a bad thing in itself but when you consider none of these drivers are licenced to carry passengers as a taxi and are therefore not insured this is where the problem lies. More so, there have been a number of rape and mugging cases because of a few of these drivers, so my advice spend the extra £5-10 and take a black cab

    Takeaway prices
  • Tip Rating:
  • In many restaurants and snack shops that have both take away and sit down dining, the prices for sit down dining can be more expensive. We stopped by La Creperie de Hampstead's South Kensington location and thought since we were a tube stop away from our hotel that we would eat there instead of taking it back to the hotel. But I had happened to notice the prices on the takeaway menu and the sit down menu was almost double! L6 for a crepe seemed a bit steep so we got back up and ordered takeaway food. I also noticed this at a bakery, although the price difference was not all that great.

    Taking suitcases on the Tube?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Taking a suitcase on the Tube? OK. Just don't take it through the turnstile! (unless you're really crafty and can manuver it through the turnstile...WITHOUT GETTING STUCK!) I thought it was "proper" and "chivalrous" if I carried my friend's suitcase for her, after I met her at Heathrow. We started going through the turnstile when I find I'm stuck because the handle of the rollersuitcase was caught! We spent about a 1/2 hour trying to turn the suitcase on its side to get it out, while 2 (very cute!) Tube workers laughed at us and took a camera photo of us trying to get it out! Tip: At almost, if not all, Tube stations, there is a side entrance for people with luggage or other bulky items. Use it.

    Traffic Light Cameras too!
  • Tip Rating:
  • A traffic light camera - London
    A traffic light camera
    by easyoar

Whilst static speed cameras have to be painted bright colours so you can see them in britain, I do not believe this to be the case for Traffic Light Cameras. A Traffic Light Camera will capture your image if you jump a red light (I believe some of them can trigger on speed too!). Britain is not a good place for a motorist, cars tend to cost more than many other places (it's an island, so it is harder to source vehicles from elsewhere!). There are also lots of fines for motorists, so take care!

    $$ to pounds Money exchange
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are coming to London from the US a good thing to remember is to change your $ to pounds before your trip. The exchange fee's at the airports are outrageous. I belong to AAA so i was able to go online and order some money to be directly sent to my home or my local AAA office if I preffered. This way there was no hassle and no waiting in line and NO HORRID FEES! There is still a small fee but not much. The website gives you alot of ideas on how to go about getting the money you need also for the type of trip you are taking.

    Washrooms, ashtrays and seating...lack of.
  • Tip Rating:
  • A seat! Quick grab it! - London
    A seat! Quick grab it!

If you are going to spend the day walking round sightseeing there will inevitably come a time when you need to use the washrooms. Good luck! This became a battle for me each day during my trip. I did learn a few tips along the way. Firstly I didn't find any public toilets in London. I mainly relied on department stores and it must be stressed that not all had them. If you are lucky enough to find one that did [ Marks and Spencers are a good bet ] head for the fartherest corner of the top most floor. You will maybe find 3 tired looking facilities with about a dozen people lined up to use them. I mean this is a basic, vital need and what councils expect us "money spending" tourists to do while donating to the economy is beyond me. There simply wasn't enough "places to go". Smoking outside in public wasn't a problem but finding an ashtray or appropriate bin was. Except in Scotland where they have small recepticles everywhere for this purpose. Smoking is obviously not allowed inside shops, cafes, restaurants etc. Now finding somewhere to sit!....This problem also plagued me each day. I mean you tend to walk around all day and your legs get seriously sore and tired. I found myself constantly scouring the streets not for a bench [ not many of them ], but a small ledge or low wall that I could park myself down on for a moment or two. And if you find one don't hesitate to use it as most others do the same thing. Another idea is to go to a cafe and just order a cup of coffee simply for the pleasure of sitting down and having a rest.

    Pigeons! Pigeons! Pigeons!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Some view them as a London icon, something to be fed, and enjoyed. Others view them as a menace! London has millions of pigeons, mostly of the grey variety, and now and again a white one. When eating in an outdoor area, watch out for them.... if you leave your food for an instant, they will be all over it! As can be seen in the first photo, the ladies left their seat for a couple of minutes to get their order inside, and whilst they were away... the pigeons did play! The best thing to do with these now very tame creatures, is to ignore them. Do NOT feed them and encourage them in any way, as they will badger you... Alfred Hitchcock's scarey movie, 'The Brds', comes to mind!! Aaaaah. Plus... bird poo aint nice... and if they suddenly take flight next to you... they may leave you a little green and slimey calling card!!!
