Ice cream vans and hot dog stalls.
  • Tip Rating:
  • You may see them at major tourist attractions or in the parks Don't eat anything from either you don't know where they've been or how long they've been there. No-one i know who lives in london would ever buy anything from either of them. I bought a bottle of water from an ice-cream van at Tate modern and it was two months out of date and the label was in Turkish!

    Spiked drinks
  • Tip Rating:
  • A problem ( not specific to London by any means) is "spiking" of drinks in bars / nightclubs. By "spiking" I don't mean slipping an extra vodka in an orange juice, but the use of seriously strong sedatives such as Rohypnol, with the victims then being taken somewhere and sexually assaulted. In some cases, the women are not even aware of what has happened until much later. The advice is never to accept drinks from strangers unless you see them poured yourself by the barstaff, never leave your drink unattended and be careful.

Some tips you need to know....
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are some tips of good info I think is important to know if you are thinking in coming in London for holidays or living. Being woman is not secure passing parks or dark zones at night. Especially between 9pm and 4am. There are many people hide there and you can have a big scary. I said being woman because is always more dangerous than being a man, but it concerns to both. There are also different 'danger' areas in London that is not recommended to pass, specially at night, such as Harlesden, Hackney, some Brixton areas and South London. In these areas there are a lot of street violence and more 'doggy' or weird things happening. You also need to be aware of teenagers and children [8 to 10 years old], some of them are very aggressive and look for trouble with anyone. Be aware as well of people who you do not know and they start talking to you in the bus stop, overall at night. I hope these tips are helpful enough. :-) good luck and good stay!

    Pickpockets
  • Tip Rating:
  • I cannot stress this enough after seeing it happen to people too many times keep hold of your valuables don't leave them in a bag you are carrying over your shoulder it's very easy for them to be stolen. Don't keep all your cards and money in one wallet unless you really need to don't take your passport out with you. Don't use your phone outside of tube stations. carry your train/bus ticket in seperately from everything else so that you can at least still get back to where you're staying. If you do end up getting something stolen report it straight away as soon as you notice it's missing call one of the directory lines who'll help you locate the nearest police station to you and give you their number.

    Phone Theft

  • Charing Cross Train Station - London

One of the fastest growing crimes in London is phone snatching. This occurs when you are speaking on your phone, or have it in your hand. The thief will come up to their victim, usually from behind, snatch the phone, and run away before you know whats happened. This often occurs in busy places, such as train stations and high streets, so don't be fooled by the sense of security that a busy place can give. Stay vigilant when using your phone, try not to use it in busy places and if you do have to, try to keep it out of sight.

    London Food Stalls
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you are in central London you will come across a number of food stalls, which sell hamburgers, hotdogs etc. BEWARE, they are very expensive and unhealthy. There have been a number of television investigations into these food stalls, which have shown them to be about as healthy as eating a dead pigeon. The meat is old and the food is often re-heated day after day if it is not sold. My advice is for you to stick to McDonalds!

    Back in Vicrorian days
  • Tip Rating:
  • Victorian London - Crime - warnings to travellers In walking through the streets, avoid lingering in crowded thoroughfares, and keep on the right-hand side of the footway. Never enter into conversation with men who wish to show you the way, offer to sell "smuggled cigars" or invite you to take a glass of ale or play a game at skittles. If in doubt about the direction of any street or building, inquire at a respectable shop or of the nearest policeman. Monday is the workman's holiday; Saturday the most aristocratic day for the Opera, Crystal Palace, &c. Consult the Post Office Directory for addresses of friends who do not live in lodgings. Do not relieve street-beggars, and avoid bye-ways and poor neighbourhoods after dark. Carry no more money about you than is necessary for the day's expenses. Look after your watch and chain, and take care of your pockets at the entrance to theatres, exhibitions, churches, and in the omnibuses and the streets. Evacuation warnings
  • Tip Rating:
  • With threatened terrorist attacks, warnings to evacuate the Underground occur from time to time. I once was trying to get to Edgeware Road and a tube train had just arrived. I was waiting for a different destination, and knew another train was due in 2 minutes. However, the train didn't leave, and an announcement was made to move down the platform away from the train Still it didn't leave. Those on the platform asked a worker who told us someone on the train had thrown something out onto the platform, and they were waiting for security to come in case it was a bomb. Then we were told to leave the platform. A group of us headed for the nearest exit sign which took us up some stairs, but the door at the top was locked. We had to race down and find the main exit and eventually I decided to take a bus instead. While waiting for a bus , I heard sirens and saw police cars and ambulances racing along; and announcements to evacuate the whole Underground station. My friend whom I was to meet at Edgeware Road had heard there was an alert and had waited for me; but I still worry about that locked door and how we could have been trapped. So , always head for the Main Exit.

Watch out while walking in London! :)
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you're used to nice flat, even footpaths/pavements/sidewalks (whatever you want to call them), as I am being from Australia, then it may pay to consciously lift your feet a little higher than normal in London - or, I guess, in any European city - I found myself tripping up several times in the 2 weeks I was there, and that's not usual for me! Luckily I only actually fell down once, but I think that was more to do with the fact I was wearing sandals and making a mad dash out of Wimbledon to catch my flight back home....

Money... Cash, Travelers' Cheques, ATM/bank machine cards, credit cards... Traditionally, travelers' cheques have been the secure answer to a travelers' needs. Banks and Exchange bureaus will exchange them for a fee if you can't get to an office of the issuer like Thomas Cook or American Express. And they're still a viable, and secure option. I gave up TC's. I rely mainly on my ATM card and my credit card. I don't think my ATM card would work as a debit card outside of Canada, possibly the US but it's also the money machine card. 1. The ATM card will default to your PRIMARY ACCOUNT ONLY . For most people that is your CHEQUING account if you have that connected to your ATM card. At least that's been my experience. You very likely won't get a choice of what account to take your money out of. Make sure your PIN number is 4 digits, NO LETTERS Just numbers! 2. You can also get cash advances off your credit card. Make sure you know what your daily limit for cash advances is. Translate this into the local currency . 500 dollars a day is *not* 500 pounds. On credit card cash advances, interest starts adding up the minute you take out that advance. Make a payment to your credit card before you go, ideally to put the card into a credit balance. Then you don't get any interest charged when the balance is below zero. That goes for purchases as well as cash advances. 3. Have a backup. Once in awhile an ATM won't accept your card. In that case i just used my credit card for a cash advance. Make sure you have a backup, either 2 atm cards for 2 different banks, or an atm and a credit card that you can get an advance from. If you feel more comfortable having those travelers cheques as a backup, go ahead. If you get them in local currency, chances are you *may* be able to use them in a shop as local currency instead of going to the bank to get cash. You can also get a cash advance on common credit cards like Visa and MasterCard in a bank though you may have to show your passport.
