  • I was visiting central London after few months and I was surprised to see those Heritage wardens. You could see them around Trafalgar Square. They are in large number and stopping or warning people feeding pigeons or any other act which could damage the beauty of this monument.

    Personal items
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just like anywhere else you should be careful and mind your belongings at all times. If you're carrying a purse turn it so it's opening is facing towards you and not outwards towards other people, or with your wallet make sure it is firmly in your pocket, but keep some money seperate. Be especially careful in crowded places - like on the tube. No doubt you'll be fine, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

    London Underground
  • Tip Rating:
  • 1) This can get very hot in the summer so try not to travel at peak times on hot days, and when you do travel, take a bottle of water. You have to be prepared to stand on a crammed tube train nestling under some fat bloke's sweaty armpit! Maybe its an essential part of the London experience. 2) Make sure that you've bought a travelcard for the right zones because it is easy to assume that a particular station is in zone 3 when its actually in zone 2. 3) There is a problem with mobile phone theft outside tube stations because this is when people start bringing out their phones to read text messages they receive as they come out from underground. Wait until you're way from the station before you read your message. 4) Obviously pickpockets operate in crowded areas like tube stations and on the escalators, so keep your bag in front of you.

    Directions
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bring a good map with you or get one from your hotel, the free one our hotel gave us was actually pretty good. Twice we asked directions, once from a shop clerk and once from a man who appeared to be from the neighborhood, both times we were just a couple of blocks away and both times we were sent in the wrong direction. On a previous visit we were up in Hampstead and we saw a guy on a motorcycle writing stuff down. We asked him what he was doing, he said that he was studying to be a London cab driver and was taking a practice test. Apparently it takes several years to become one because of all the confusing street name changes.

Ive been caught before especiallywhen ive been walking out in the country but the nettle thats growing happily along this pathway near our residential area at the back of our shopping mall - which is a public pathway accessing the rest of King Georges Park, the Wandle leisure centre and around to another major access road and the buses - right here in the middle of London !! - has bitten me once a few months ago so i have to remind myself not to let my fingers or hand or leg touch it as i rush past on my way to work in the mornings! as its still here and growing happily! it looks like harmless plants and now looking pretty as well with the purple flowers in amongst it too - but touch nettle and you will sting - unhappily!- for several hours! Not nice at all! Please dont ever export it home to Australia or New Zealand - the emigration of gorse plants and rats was enough!!

    Tube station accessibility
  • Tip Rating:
  • Many of the tube stations require navigation of stairs, the maps inside the tube are marked for which stations are accessible and the tube guru on the website attached has a wheelchair symbol for those that are accessible and also details where to go once inside the tube station.

  • While pigeons are less of a problem than they used to be at Trafalgar Square, they are a HUGE menace at Piccadilly Circus!! I don't think eating here is a good idea......we watched a couple of people get "dive-bombed" by these hungry parasites! Ethan was concerned about them when I snapped this picture!!

    Walking on uneven cobbles?
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Uneven paving stones - please take care' This is what the sign says. The strange thing is, you have to REALLY turn your head UP to be able to read this sign hanging from a tree branch... and in doing so, are likely to fall over said uneven paving! The best place to look when walking on uneven paving is DOWN .. This sign is found in my little market at St James in Piccadilly. It is a gorgeous market, and a personal favourite.. but this sign just makes me chuckle :)

    www.Londonapartmentsdirect.com
  • Tip Rating:
  • London apartments direct (www.Londonapartmentsdirect.com) is a fraudulant site designed to get people to pay extortionate amounts of money for a hotel or appartment that never gets booked. nor will you get the money back or ever hear from the guy again. The best way to avoid sites like this is to make sure you pay by card so at least you can claim the money back and you also have a record of the transaction, be very weary of any site that asks for cash cheque or travellers cheques before you arrive. If in doubt ask a few vt members in the london forum Have a look at these links for more details of other Vt members that have had problems with them. http://forum.virtualtourist.com/discussion-257339-1-1-Travel-0-0-London-discussion.html#answerID_1821834 http://forum.virtualtourist.com/3/discussion-278658-1-1-Travel-0-309228-London-discussion.html?wosid=dIAMrGJbStjqPfCRL7bqjM My advice to you is not to book with them, however if you already have, or have had trouble, make sure you let the authorities know and at the very least post your problem either on the London forum here or on other forums so that others won't fall into the same trap.

    Caledonian Road
  • Tip Rating:
  • This road runs north from Kings Cross towards Angel and Islington , the parade of shops by the Ferodo railway bridge is particulary dangerous for the unwary traveller as the local young offenders from the council estate behind the 24/7 shop chuck eggs at passers by and people sitting outside the Islington Bar. If you get hit it's best just to take it as you really don't want to be going onto the estate after them. One of these kids has an arm like Steve Backley and can pick off a backpacker from about 400 metres.
