Caledonian Road
  • Tip Rating:
  • This road runs north from Kings Cross towards Angel and Islington , the parade of shops by the Ferodo railway bridge is particulary dangerous for the unwary traveller as the local young offenders from the council estate behind the 24/7 shop chuck eggs at passers by and people sitting outside the Islington Bar.
If you get hit it's best just to take it as you really don't want to be going onto the estate after them.
One of these kids has an arm like Steve Backley and can pick off a backpacker from about 400 metres.

Dangers of the tube ~ please read
  • Tip Rating:
  • I don't want to unnecessarily alarm you, but as with everywhere you go, there are certain dangers on the London underground.

There is always the danger of falling onto the lines, and you will be killed, either electrocuted by the huge voltage on the lines, or being squashed by the next tube!

So please be careful, and wise. Stand BEHIND the yellow line as advised and always be aware of those aorund you. Sometimes the platform gets crowded and I often get worried that I might be jostled and fall onto the lines. I keep a certain distance between myself and the person next to me. Just be extra careful please.

Unfortunately there are people who choose to end their lives by purposefully jumping onto the lines. This is so tragic for the family concerned, and the driver of the tube more often than not needs psychological counselling to get over it! Trauma after an attempted suicide is one of the greatest causes of illness for Tube drivers. So whenever you hear 'this line is currently closed due to a person under a train at xyz station'... you know what they mean...

Millions of London people (myself included!) commute daily and there's certainly no immediate threat to you, I just thought you should be aware that there are dangers.

Bad weather and the Underground goes underground!

  • The long tube escalators! - London
    The long tube escalators!

In bad weather the transport system is always affected. Whether it is snow, wind, lightening... all bring with them delays and suspensions of sections/whole lines/stations.

This can be quite frustrating when all you want to do is get home after a long, hard day at the office.. and then you find you have to rethink your way home!

Last week on the Bakerloo line turned 100... (congrats!) but with that came a storm and some lightening touched down quite close to the track in Vauxhall, which rendered trains there helpless.

This meant that Waterloo was running with HUGE delays and cancellations! Of the 19 platforms they have, there were only two with trains, both over half an hour late already... so I gathered I wouldn't be able to squash my way onto one of those... and had to rethink my way home.

Thankfully I do have an alternative!

Such is life when commuting, but one never seems to come to grips with it, as we rely on it so.

    Watch your drinks!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • A friend of mine learnt the hard way when her drink was spiked one night. This was something i was very cautious of the whole time i was there, not to leave my drink unattended! I do realise most people know thats common sense. But for those oblivious to whats really going on. Keep an eye out!

    PICKPOCKETS
  • Tip Rating:
  • Please, please, please take all posible steps not to be the next victim of pickpocketing. Its not a good feeling to have something stolen. I say this because we was in London 3 years ago and my mother had her purse lifted, and don't think just because it is zipped up inside your bag that it is safe, because its not, these people are experts and if your not extra carefull they will ruin your day. Be alert on the London tube system this is where a lot of them operate. Best bet is to by one of them wallets with a small chain attached, or a money belt. So take care out there and do not be another victim coz the chance of getting your wallet, or bag back are nill.

    Traffic Lights
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of THE most annoying things that tourists do in London is they don't think the traffic signals apply to them. Traffic lights in central London are eternally blocked by herds of tourists streaming across the crossings, even when the 'red man' is showing (meaning DON'T WALK) and the green light is on. If you are visiting London, please, please, please pay attention to the signals!

    Take only official "black" cabs!
  • Tip Rating:
  • When I first arrived in London and attended our first study abroad orientation, the first thing my school administration warned us about was against riding in just ANY taxi cab in London.

Apparently just the week before, a girl coming home late from a club took an unofficial minicab and ended up being raped and murdered.

Note: TAKE AN OFFICIAL "BLACK" TAXI CAB. They are not always black because of the crazy advertisements that are plaguing all aspects of London life. They are quite distinctive looking, though they are plastered with advertisements. Make sure there's a meter in the cab and a little yellow sign atop it saying "Taxi" or "Cab" or something like that. Don't take a mini cab...for your own safety!

If you're coming home late from a pub or a club somewhere and are just too drunk to walk home...call a cab. It's safer. There are numbers for accredited cabs everywhere. Contact a local police station for the number for an accredited cab company.

    Gangs of youths
  • Tip Rating:
  • Avoid these like the plague as they can attack you for no reason whatsoever (such as you won't give them a cigarette, or you look at them in a way they don't like)! Danger points are deserted streets, council estates and at train stations, though they are not afraid of beating someone up in a busy street. I have seen this happen to my friends many times! They are not deterred if you are with other people, and it doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman. The boys will attack your male companions, and because many refuse to hit women, their girlfriends will attack your female companions. The girlfriends have very sharp nails! Do not take out your mobile phone or show them that you smoke. Be polite, avoid eye contact, and keep away! Of course, this is rare, and this risk applies to young people and students. Follow the advice, and you will keep out of trouble!

    Don't take an unlicensed mini-cab / taxi
  • Tip Rating:
  • This tip is to say rather be safe then sorry, there have been some unfortunate incidents involving unlicensed cabs / taxis.

My advice is to either hail a black cab which operate frequently in central London, or else obtain a mini cab direct from the company office or via phone. If you come out of a night club the door men will usually find you a cab home.
