Round & About: Old Wellington
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just before you reach Manchester Cathedral this lovely old pub - The Old Wellingon - remains sandwhiched amongst other builings on the old market site. Its Manchester's oldest pub, dating back to 1550. Seeing it here took me completely by surprise - I hadn't realised Manchester still had buildings like this! Its fortunate to be still here at all as it was badly damamged in the IRA bombing of 1996 and has undergone restorative work. An extremely popular place on a Saturday afternoon for a drink and a snack - looked like standing room only.

Round & About: Sinclair's Oyster Bar
  • Tip Rating:
  • Adjacent to theOld Wellington is Sinclair's Oyster Bar - slightly younger as it dates from 1720. It still serves its succulent oysters, along with substantial pub meals. In 1971 this building was lifted as part of the Arndale Shopping centre re-development and was re-opened 10 years later.

    Mersey River walk Didsbury

On a sunny day it is a pleasant walk along the River Mersey from Didsbury village to Chorlton. It takes about 2 hours and is not too busy, with good footpaths and is well signposted. If you get tired there are plenty of places to stop along the way.
From Didsbury village at Simon's bridge turn right along the Trans Pennine route and follow the signs along the river to West Didsbury and Chorlton. You will pass through Northenden, then West Didsbury, then Chorlton Water Park.
When you get to Chorlton Ees nature park on the right take this path then turn left and follow the road into Beech Road. Here you will find Chorlton Green with a great choice of bars, cafes and restaurants to reward you for your efforts.
You can take a taxi at Toto cars which is at the end of Beech Rd, or walk back along Barlow Moor Road to West Didsbury - for more bars and restaurants.

  • Address: Simon's Bridge, Didsbury village.
  • Directions: South on A34, left to Didsbury then left into Dene Road. Walk past the allotments and you will come to the River. Follow signs for Trans Pennine route.

Round & About: Quarry Bank Mill (Styal Mill)
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is an old cotton mill in the village of Styal. It has working looms and much of the village is as it was in the days of the workhouse, icluding the village shop and allotments. It's a pretty village witht he opportunity for walking in Styal Country Park from the Mill itself.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Portland Basin - it's a little museum about local history next to a canal, once visited by Jude Law the actor.
It's got some good points of interest, some may say it's quant (sorry about spelling). It's a nice peaceful place to go.

  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are a Christian then Holy Trinity and Christ Church Stalybridge is a great church to go to a service at.
It has lively services, a worship group (including guitars and drums) and a welcoming congregation. Sometimes it has guests from all over the world.
