Wigan is also situated on the Leeds to Liverpool Canal so you may well arrive in Wigan by narow boat! Whilst it doesn't have the spectacular Bingley Five Rise lock staircase section (much further upstream) it does have its fair share of locks to navigate. Starting by Trencherfield Mill, 23 locks raise the canal 298 feet above sea level in the space of 3 miles.

Wigan straddles the North Western border between Greater Manchester and Lancashire, its between junctions 24 and 27 of the M6 and junctions 5 and 6 of the M61. By rail it lies between Warrington and Preston on the West Coast line (North/South) and between Manchester and Liverpool/Southport on the East/West line - our mode of transport, arriving at Wigan North Western station in the centre of town.
The other station Wigan Wallgate is just a couple of minutes walk away in the direction of the town centre.
