Southampton Old Bowling Green is the oldest in the world. It has continuous records of its use dating back to 1299. Every August a competition is held here for the Knighthood of the Green and the winner is called "Sir" within the club.
Charles Miller, the man who first introduced football to Brazil at the end of the nineteenth century, came from Southampton Football Club. You can see the club Miller played for at St. Mary's Stadium. Another player from that era, C.B. Fry, who played for Southampton in the 1902 FA Cup Final, was capped for England at Football and Cricket, held the world long jump record and when he became a delegate at the League of Nations, was offered the throne of Albania!
St. Leonard's Church in Bursledon dates back to the twelfth century. When I was a boy, I sang in the church choir here.
Globetrott sent me this wonderful photo. It's an "off the beaten path" tip because it's not on the QE2 -- it's at Michael's house!!!
