There are many public footpaths in the countryside around Barkway, and the area to the west and northwest are particularly worth exploring. Ignoring the terrible eyesores of the huge radio communications masts (RAF Barkway), the locality is filled with archaeological relics - moats and ancient roads, suggesting continuous habitation here for thousands of years.
Rokey Wood, to the west of the village is where the Roman hoard was found.

Weekend? Ha ha ha. There is a better Sunday bus service across the Gobi Desret in Gansu (Western China) is more comprehensive than in rural Hertfordshire.
There is not a single Sunday rural bus service in the whole of north-east Hertfordshire. Even the services in BS are linked mainly to Stansted Airport.
