It's a struggle to find a decent cup of coffee in England, but Costa is good. It's the chain of course, there are Costa coffee shops all over, and the coffee and snacks are standard in all of them so you know what you're going to get.
Favorite Dish: I drink my coffee strong, black, no sugar so I have Primo Americano in Costa.
Just outside Welwyn Garden City in the village of Lemsford, this is an old country pub that I used to use way back when I lived in the area many years ago. It's been a pub for over 250 years.
It's been taken over by the Vintage Inns chain so the food, which was once about the best in the area, is a bit formula and standard - but it's still excellent. There's a big menu choice with just about something to suit every taste. There are sandwiches, salads, snacks, main courses, grills, fish dishes, Sunday traditional roasts, desserts...
The pub, set amongst farming fields, is all brickwork, old beams, low ceilings, nooks and crannies. Meals are served informally in the main bar or in three or four dining areas. There's also a large garden area to eat in or just to enjoy an al fresco drink.
Favorite Dish: We both like the beef, ale & mushroom pie, individual pies with light crust pastry served with mashed potato and vegetables. I really like the wild Scottish venison steaks and also lamb shank which is served with rosemary roasted vegetables and dauphinoise pototoes. Geina says the aromatic beef curry has genuine flavours, is excellent and is her favourite. It comes with cardamom rice and poppadams. She also enjoys traditional fish n chips, which is a very large piece of fish in light, crispy beer batter with chipped potatoes and peas.
And I can never ignore apple & blackberry crumble, which the Crooked Chimney does extremely well, served with vanilla ice cream and custard.
Below is a list of cafes, restaurants and take-away places in Welwyn Garden City. I've actually only eaten in three restaurants in the town, these being a good Chinese restaurant called Fu Hao, a good Indian called The Pavilion (next door to the Fu Hao Chinese) and the Stanborough Beefeater.
