Unique dark, dingy, smelly night club. (Don't let that put you off!). Plays Rock, Metal & Indie downstairs & soul, funk, disco & everything upstairs. Booze very cheap, get pissed on a tenner, can't be bad! Veggie Burgers & all types of culinary delights wait upstairs for you to purchase! Go & experiance the unimaginable! Pretend to be a member, tell them you've left your card at home & you'll get in cheap, works everytime, corker!

None, the smellier the better. Loads of people gothed up to the nines!(bit scarey!)

  • Now only in the past five years or so has this road been a good place to go out, it caters for a different clientel then the city centre, more for trendy students, locals and a slightly older croud than the 14 year olds you'll find in Spiders.
Starting at the Spring Bank end there's Zooalogical, a large bar with a good selection of beers (I'm talking bitter) but you do get quite a few townies in this one as it's one of the cheaper bars down the street, you also get karaoke, need I say more?
Further down there's Pave which is my favourite, big selection of Belgian bottled beers, Hoegarden on tap and during the day they do nice food too. This, well all the bars get very busy, this one has a garden for the summer, most of the bars have a terrace.
Next is Lounge which is a bit trendy, but one of the bigger bars.
Next is Linnet and Lark which is good during the day, cheap bar food, a bit Weatherspoons like, cheap beer, but at night it attracts all the Stella drinkers.
I think next comes Dukes, which I've only been in once, it was quite expensive, and there's more of a lean towards lagers.
Then comes Charmichals, they also do food, but it seems quite pricy, I've not eaten here, not as many good beers on tap.
All these bars are on the same side of the street.
On the opposite side are more bar/cafes, open until dinner time.
There's alos a lot of take away places for after the bars too.
Asian Kitchen is great for a sit down curry, Ray's Place you can bring your own bottle, there's two buffet style places, one's Thai and one's Japanese (though this one seems to change all the time) the fish and chip shop is good for take aways, but I went in the kebab shop and asked for a nan bread with chips inside and got a plain pizza base and a tray of chips, not quite right or tasty.
There's a Co-Op that stayes open late and a 24 hour Sainburys at Jacksons.

Most don't really bother, just smart will do, trainers are fine.

  • The Marina area and Beverly Road.
The marina area is surrounded by bars and clubs, all with an open aspect out onto the marina. It's a great place to cool down on a hot summer night.
Beverly Road is lined with bars and clubs and it would take you a couple of nights to get around them all (unless you really go for it!).

  • it is unlike most other clubs - there is a wide range of music - mostly rock and indie but also an upstairs room which plays 70's cheese or dance. The place has been around for ever - many of my friends parents used to go there when they were young. The glass collectors are notorious - they must be the only retired couple who work as glass collecters in a rock club!! The decor leaves a lot to be desired - lots of black walls, iron spiders webs and red furnishings. Drinks there are unbeliievable - 40p for a vodka!! The cocktails are great - beware the pangalagtic gargle blaster (my personal favourite) It is a pint of spirits (only 2.30 pounds) not many can stand straight after 3.

You can get in wearing anything but you will probably feel more comfortable wearing something black or in rock, indie or skater style. I have gone many times just in jeans.

The Lamp - proving that Hull can do 'hip'
    Orbital_

  • ‘The Lamp’ may look like your typical northern pub from the outside (save for the bright neon sign), but inside is nothing of the sort. Run by the same team who own the equally buzzing 'Peaberries' coffee house and 'Pave' bar, 'The Lamp' is a seriously funky joint in the evening and also perfectly placed as a launchpad to the renowned 'Welly' club just over the road. Instead of the usual ubiquitous piped chart-dance you get in most city bars around these parts, here seriously talented DJ's spin all manner of beats, and there's regular live performances by local bands of various genres. Great decor, and an affable, hip crowd make this an essential option for any decent night out in the city.

Pretty much anything goes as long as you don't look like a complete tramp or something.

    Private parties

  • This is apparently common to attend a (student) private partie even if you don't know anyone there...
This is pretty cool, for any reason people in a student house decide to organise a party in their house and welcome (almost) any other people as long as they bring their own booze.
The difficult part is obviously to get the address...

    Just as you are...

Green Brick Pub: A view over the marina & a nice pint of beer
    Piggy73
  • Updated By Piggy73 on September 5, 2005

  • We had an excellent pint of beer but found the food not very good value.

As vegetarians there were 2 options (veggie sausage & mash or leek & gruyere pastie) on the main course section & after placing & paying for our order 10 minutes later were informed that one of them was unavailable but they had some other options -veggie burger, or veggie lasagne (very imaginative !!!).

The pasty was ok but the salad was limp & it was obvious that it had been prepared earlier.
However my partner discovered a small bug in his salad (despite asking for his meal without salad) and it was replaced & delivered to our table with an apology from a flustered member of the kitchen staff.

By all means have a pint at this pub but if you are looking for really good food - look elsewhere.

  • I discovered this club far too late and only went there a couple of time...

I agreed the gothic atmosphere could be a little bit scary but don't be afraid of it! This is the best place to go if you want to meet 'normal' people and not these vulgar half-naked chicken dancing around their purse (stil didn't got the point ;-) you'd find in most of the other clubs.

Don't go there for house or electro music, you won't find any!! Good rock/pop music instead...

Even better, you'll find a big variety of cocktails and almost for free !!

    Preferably black!

The Minerva Pub: A view over the Humber

  • This pub does have some character & great views over the River Humber.

It used to be a favourite spot of ours for a typical bar meal as on our 1st visit we asked about vegetarian meals & the smartly attired chef offered some other imaginative meals that were not listed on the menu. We were very pleased as it was obvious that the vegetables served with our meal choices were very fresh.

However we (& other friends) have since been back in 2005 & have been disappointed. We have seen kitchen staff in food stained t-shirts & once a bicycle was being wheeled out behind the hot food serving counter ! The food we were served was well cooked & the veggies were very well boiled & just very average pub food :-(

It's a pity as this pub is in a great location.

At least the beer is ok :-)
