    Alum Sands

by vichatherly Written Aug 1, 2015

A lovely souvenir to take home from The Isle of Wight comes in the form of a fine traditional product of Alum Bay. You can take home some of the 21 coloured sands.

Queen Victoria in 1860 was presented with sand art gifts made from the unique coloured sand of Alum Bay and this led to the beginning of a very special souvenir tradition that is still as popular today as it was in Victorian times.

We picked upon a small teddy bear to be the carrier of our sand. Our little lad took great delight in filling it with layer upon layer of the coloured sand. It used to be that visitors collected their own sand from the beach, but this practice is now frowned upon and at the Needles you can visit the well organised sand filling facility. Great fun for young and old.

    The Needles Landmark Attraction

by vichatherly Written Jul 9, 2015

July 2015. We spent a lovely day out at Alum Bay, just outside of Freshwater.

We took the cable car down to the beach and took a boat ride out to the Needles lighthouse.

Afterwards we made a souvenir teddy bear full of the colourful Alum Bay sands. Our little boy Alex had a great time choosing the different colours to make up the layers. Mummy gave him a hand of course.

We a round of dinosaur crazy golf followed by a picnic lunch. An ideal family day out.

    Jimi Hendrix memorial

    TO BE UPDATED SOON
In 1970 Jimi Hendrix, amongst others,
played to 500,000 people, the climax of a 5 day
music extravaganza attracting an audience and
artists from all over the world.

The Isle of Wight Festivals of the late 60's and 1970 were Europe's equivalent
to Woodstock... impressive for a small island off the south coast of England!

There was commissioned a life size statue of Hendrix which is displayed at
Dimbola Lodge in Freshwater, looking out towards the 1970 festival site on
Afton Down. As Patrons of Dimbola they hope that this will create more interest
in the area's cultural and literary heritage.... Hendrix being as important culturally
as Tennyson, in his own way.
The state was unveiled prior to the 2006 IOW Festival - which will be - the 5th anniversary of the reactivated event.

Hendrix strove to combine what he called "earth", a blues, jazz, or funk driven rhythm accompaniment, with "space", the high-pitched psychedelic sounds created by his guitar improvisations. As a record producer, Hendrix also broke new ground in using the recording studio as an extension of his musical ideas; he was one of the first to experiment with stereophonic and phasing effects during recording.

Hendrix was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. His star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (at 6627 Hollywood Blvd.) was dedicated in 1994. In 2006, his debut album, Are You Experienced, was inducted into the United States National Recording Preservation Board's National Recording Registry. Rolling Stone named Hendrix number one on their list of the "100 greatest guitarists of all time" in 2003[3] and ranked him #6 in their 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004 [4]. He was also ranked number three in VH1's "100 Greatest Hard Rock Artists."

Hendrix is recognized as one of the greatest and most influential guitarists in rock music history.[2] After initial success in England, he achieved worldwide fame following his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Later, Hendrix headlined the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival before his death in 1970, at the age of 27.

A self-taught musician, Hendrix played a Fender Stratocaster guitar turned upside down ("left-handed") and restrung to suit him. Hendrix pioneered the technique of guitar feedback with overdriven amplifiers, incorporating what was previously an undesirable sound into his music. He built upon the innovations and influences of blues stylists such as B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Albert King, and T-Bone Walker, and derived style from rhythm and blues and soul guitarists Curtis Mayfield, Steve Cropper, and Cornell Dupree, as well as from traditional jazz. Hendrix's flamboyant stage persona was most likely inspired by rock pioneer Little Richard, with whom he toured as part of Richard's back-up band, "The Upsetters".
