Appley Tower beach: Beach Parties in Summertime
  • Tip Rating:
  • This nightime activity happens during the warm Summer nights usually a Sunday when some of the discos close. Walk along the beach daytime and tell all young people to show up about 10 pm or when the pubs close with a bottle of cider and some firewood. There are usually large numbers of foreign students who come to the Island and stay with host families, usually Scandanavian, French, German. 20 years have passed since I was there but follow these instructions and you make your own party unless the County Council have banned beach parties and the local Law enforce the ban.....sorry don't know the situation now. A guitar or a ghetto blaster and make sure you know when the tide goes out and comes in. Don't take deck chairs as that will get you into trouble. Usually there is a big crowd in the Prince Consort Pub which always up for an after pub party.

CASUAL but a jacket in case it gets wet or cold. Swimming trunks or bathing suit....But in my day it was just hide your kegs in a bush and streak down the sands skinny dipping.....
Beware if your skinny dipping and your clothes get nicked (stolen), as I once had to walk home 4am in nothing but a cardboard box!!!

Although this really forms part of the three-beach, six-mile Ryde stretch, many of you considered Appley to be a beach in its own right. And when asked to nominate your absolute favourite, Appley came fifth, well ahead of several more established Isle of Wight resort areas. Rated the cleanest beach, Appley’s fabulous expanse of golden sand is best experienced at low tide. Parking and Access: beach access from the road, parking in Appley Park. Public Transport: Take Southern Vectis bus along Esplanade. Amenities: Picnic area in Appley Park, nearby canoeing lake. Dogs: Not allowed May-September

King Harry, Shanklin: Great pub - nearly a top-ten

I was so happy to find this pub with its wonderful garden that I thought of putting it my Top Ten (see my album, on my home page). The bar is actually part of the Glenbrooke Hotel, in Shanklin's charming old thatched village. It struck me as a 'pub with rooms' rather than a hotel - in other words it has a relaxed ambience. The garden becomes part of Shanklin Chine, so if you want a glimpse of this ravine, and a flavour of the trees and ferns found in it, without paying the entrance fee that they charge on the other side of the road, this is the place! Sit under a palm in the charmingly lit garden with a beer, and watch for red squirrels.

Another plus (..maybe it will go in my top ten..) is the draft Budvar lager. I believe they have a good range of real ales here, though I am entirely ignorant about ale. And, for lunch, you can get a pint of prawns with hot bread and salad for a reasonable £6.50. I was happy.

We came back in the evening for a drink, and there was a friendly and jolly atmosphere in the bar. The 'Henry VIII Grill Room' was closed and so was something that looked ominously like a banqueting hall for theme nights.
I wished we'd been able to get a room here - I think they must get booked up well in advance.

Well, my husband got in and he was very scruffy.

Take your pick: Only traditional pubs on offer in Godshill

There are only two pubs in Godshill, one at each end of the village.

The Griffin is near the car park. At the back is a large lawn and a hedge maze (it was a bit scruffy at the time as they only planted it in 2000).

The other pub I recall was the Cask & Taverners, near the post office. It was filthy and had scraps of Xmas decorations still hanging on the walls...in September! Stay away!
