The Crab Inn - Shanklin by Helga67 This famous 18th-century stone-built pub is a pretty place with nice pub food and friendly staff. Local crab salads and sandwiches are among their specials. The only downside is the fact that you need to go to two separate counters to order food and beer. They have a separate corner and entrance for families with children.

Crab Inn, Shanklin by Spincat Shanklin old village is a pretty collection of higgledy piggledy thatched cottages, now mostly gift shops and tea rooms and restaurants/pubs. Thye must feature on a million boxes of shortcake! And must get packed later in the season.. A busy road runs through the village, but doesn't quite spoil the charm - though you are in a less rural setting than photos of this Inn sometimes lead you to suppose. The pub is on the corner of the road that leads to the green and loveley Shanklin Chine. You can sit out the front, and enjoy the traffic, which isn't actually that bad on an evening, and it is fun to watch to tourists go by. Alternatively, there is a very roomy restaurant on the ground floor, and a mezzanine bar. One big plus at this place : the really nice staff and efficient service. We had comfort food - sausage and mash, burgers. This could have been horrible (as there was something about this place that said 'chain' pub in a very subtle way) but it was all home made and satisfying. We didn't have starters or puddings - enough for us, with a bottle of good Pino Grigio. The Man by budapest8 Mayfair cafe in Ryde High Street is the caf I used to hang out with my friends on a Saturday afternoon. 1973 and I remember Anthony Minghella selling ice cream for his parents business behind the counter.I remember wasting those loose hours in the Summer and seeing Antony serving the guests. We didn`t go to the same school and we wern`t friends so we never spoke. As a teenager he had driven a 'Minghella' ice cream van and his father was also elected to become the mayor of Ryde. The next time I saw him came as a great shock. The Oscars Ceremony in LA on the TV and he was getting 7 Oscars for his film called for the English Patient` !!!!! Jeremy Irons went to the same school as me, Ryde Boys School on Queens Road. Not bad for a small town of ten thousand. Anyway pay the Mayfair a visit if it`s still there!

Freya, Swiss Cottage cafe gardens by freya_heaven This little cafe sits within the grounds of Osbourne House, A great place for a snack to get you through the day, we just bought sandwiches which were reasonably priced. Take the free mini bus to the Swiss Cottage, otherwise you can do the 20 minute walk from the main house. The Orangery by freya_heaven We didnt eat here but the menu looked, great & again very resonable. Wonderful views from here across the grounds & to the sea. Homemade cakes were on offer & if you fancied more a good choice of main dishes, it is the norm for the menu to have an Indian twist here to be in keeping of Queen Victorias love of India. Plus the Orangery itself is beautiful! Leave a Comment Theme: IndianPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageDirections: The Orangery, Osbourne house

Okay, I’m feeling verklempt now.... The Essex Cottage is not in Essex nor is it a cottage! Instead this restaurant is a Victorian fantasyland as dreamt up by an Aussie. Cups, saucers and chandeliers hang from the ceiling timbers, floral wallpaper blankets the wall, the waitresses wear old fashioned servants’ uniforms and most Sunday lunchtimes Christian’s father is sat in the corner playing the piano. I first dreaded going here but ended up having the best meal ever on the Isle of Wight.
The food is fantastic and the sweets are out of this world. Everything comes in huge portions. Highly recommended! Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: High Street, GodshillPhone: 01983 840 232Directions: It’s at the top end of Godshill, across from the post office.

Special dinner by tini58de We had all meals in the Old Park Hotel and enjoyed them very much!!! Even after I tore one of my ligaments - it didn't keep me from enjoying their delicious dinner in a somewhat different dining hall!!! What I found most amazing, that they had special dinners for the kids with everything you could ask for: little glasses of baby food, regular food mushed or shredded for the youngsters, French fries and other kids' delicacies - it left non of the kids hungry, I think! And us adults could enjoy a later dinner without having to bother about the kids! Leave a Comment Theme: Local

I like the ambience - especially all the posters they have about the local history, the ghost in the kitchen.... It seems the word bugle has its origin from bull since bugle produces sound similar to a bull.
