I had no idea when I arrived in Margate, that Cliftonville is a good 45 minute walk from the railway station. I dragged my suitcase after me sweltering in the august heat. People I stopped to ask for directions just said 'oh its around the corner' but it wasn't...no! it was much further... and past the Turner gallery it is up a steep hill before it levels out again...then past the police station....past some dodgy areas with lots of tatooed blokes hanging around on street corners.
Tip: get a taxi outside the railway station, it only costs 4.50. (2012)
The towns of Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate are very popular with language students, and there are lots of schools catering for those of you who want to learn English. Please be warned that some of our local yobs (every where has them!) take exception to groups of students wandering round the town, and try to cause trouble for them. If you are coming to Margate in a large group to learn English, don't carry around the rucksacks/bags that label you as a student (eg. with the company name on etc) and don't maraud up the road making lots of noise and bumping in to people.
I know everyone should be free to express themselves, but unfortunately it can cause problems.
