Located in the centre of town, the castle is an interesting place to visit. You can visit the grounds and this is free, but for a small fee you can visit the interior of the castle. During our visit the local art society was holding it's annual exhibition.

The Gatehouse is the only identifiably castly bit left of the Castle's Original structure. Built sometime before 1066. Some of the History supplied on the very reasonably priced head-set -provided in multiple language options- guides you around the grounds, the gatehouse and the Motte and Bailey along side it. The real action happens over at Battle but if you like Castles; staying in Tonbridge or Hastings and doing a Tour of Kent and East Sussex will take you to some of the (historically) biggest in the country.
If you are determined to see Tonbridge however, the Motte and Bailey give some of the best views in the area (bettered only by lookout point over towards Paddock Wood or surrounding ramparts like Oldbury Woods towards Sevenoaks) and the Castle Grounds often provide evening entertainment in the Summer including Plays and Pyrotechnic Displays even without entertainment it's a pleasant and serene setting for a picnic.

As with may of our trips we tend to eat in one location and then move to another for coffee and dessert. We moved to this café on the way to the railway station.

It was busy and the staff were quite young.

The café is also a "fine food" store - this really means that they have some niche products which people will pay a little more for than in the supermarket. saying that the stock they hold is reasonable quality.

Favorite Dish: The banana chocolate loaf was excellent!

We had made a visit to the Tonbridge area and after a lot of walking and visiting different cultural and religious locations we decided on lunch. We may have been a little selective, but finally the menu here seemed about right.

The service was very quick - the chips were good but quite a small portion.

The opening hours of the pub are:

Monday through to Thursday : 07:00 to 24:00

Friday and Saturday: 07:00 through to 01:00

    Sunday : from 07:00 to 24:00

Favorite Dish: The chicken burger was excellent!!

The company offers services in the Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding areas. We went from Tonbridge station to the village of Tudeley and called to be collected and brought back to Tonbridge town centre.

The driver was Geoffrey and he was friendly and pleasant to chat to on the short journey in both directions.

Sunday night.... late.... need a loo, need coffee... ... coffee shop shuts at 8.30pm. Got ages to wait for the train to the coast. McD's do coffee... leave the station and walk down Tonbridge High Street to find McD's. No coffee. Ask passers by for BurgerKing... just down the the road but hurry up 'cos they're closing... Found it.. they are just about to close... but they can do coffee... but sorry only a tiny drop of milk left... hmm ok... I can drink it almost black... wander back to station... at least it's not raining... and the "customer assistant" working for Connex is sweet and helpful. Thanks :))

A travel agents. Can't remember the last time I used one of these.

What to buy: Package holidays - Ugh!

What to pay: Too much - go on the internet and book it yourself - more fun and much cheaper.

    A thing of the past????

Tonbridge Warnings and Dangers

Always check with National Rail Enquiries in advance to see if there is going to be any disruptions to your journey. Otherwise you will find yourself half way to where you want to be, on a bus that's stuck in traffic and making your journey MUCH longer than you expected!

When I travelled there were engineering works between Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge. The connecting bus was waiting at T Wells and we arrived some 30-40 mins later at Tonbridge station, having driven round the countryside to pick no-one up at High Brooms.

Always check weekend rail travel. At least if you know what's happening you can take an alternative route if necessary.
