Built to be used as a promenade over the sea, the pier was later enriched with some amusement, with bars and theatres.

In the good old days it was aimed to attract the upper market. Now, after fires and damages... it is there, and people keeps walking along it.

Blackpool's North Pier is one of three of the town piers. It's is the oldest and longest one of the three and built in 19th Century (around 1860s and designed by Eugenius Birch). It was geared to serve the middle and upper social classes of people and then appropriate taste in entertainment such and admissions charges reflected this. An admission charge continued until 2011.

The Pier is a Grade II listed building and the world's oldest surviving one. The pier has a tired look after suffering fire damage and with inclement weather over the years. We went to one of the cafes for drink and saw the tides turn in for the day. The North Pier also has a theatre, bars, an arcade, a sun lounge and a carousel.

In addition to Central Pier, Blackpool has an older Victorian-era pier known as North Pier. The theatre has regular live shows. It also has fine views of the beach.
