The writer Bill Bryson commented wryly upon arriving in Liverpool that he thought we were in the middle of a litter dropping festival! It is certainly true that many people seem to think that is o.k to dispose of their rubbish by simply dropping it on the floor. The City Council say they are getting tough on offenders but so far it doesn't seem to have made much difference! Can't recommend it however as you might just be the one to get caught!

lonely eleanor rigby by sandysmith Really this could go in the off the beaten path section as this poignant art work is often missed yet is just a few steps from the Beatles quarter that is Matthew Street. Eleanor Rigby is dedicated to "all the lonely people". Maybe that is why she is in a lonely place! Anyway it is customary to leave a few flowers in her hands - unfortunately this day there was none :-(

Eleanor Rigby by sabsi The people of Liverpool seem to be very very friendly (their accent is a bit hard to understand though ;). We were searching for the Radio City Tower and couldn't find it (yes, it is possible to get lost searching for the highest building of the city ;) so Susan asked two old ladies from Liverpool. They asked us to just follow them, showed us Eleanor Rigby's statue and almost invited us for tea to show us where George Harrison lived ;-) Leave a Comment

Look out for this little book by drgrcook This is the name given to the regional accent of the people of Liverpool (who are known as Scousers). This unique accent owes much to the Irish influence and also the pollution of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries which led to a nasal twang due to the chronic blockage of the sinuses. (Try pinching your nostrils and speaking through your nose and you are halfway there!). It is presumed that the name derives from a dish - lob scouse, made from vegetables and scraps of cheap meat which was eaten by sailors. The late Fritz Speigl researched the origin of the word and interestingly found an old German recipe for "Labscouse - A sailors' dish". Look out for Fritz's book, my photo is of the first edition and remember that when complaining to the waiter that you have no meat in your stew, the correct phrase is "Eh! Dis is blind scouse" Do not expect to find a local who speaks a foreign language. Shamefully language teaching in British schools is poor and its study mostly voluntary. You will rarely find menus or signs in anything other than English. Hopefully the City of Culture status will change this. Mike Kemble has an interesting personal site about Liverpool. A building in Liverpool by vec As I had expected from an industrial town like Liverpool I found some old worn buildings, but on the places in Liverpool that I went to this was actually the worst example, so it's maybe not that bad after all. Leave a Comment

scousers tend to be quite friendly particularly the older ones on buses or in bars. Many people have strong accents but we don't all. Hiya to everyone reading this page Leave a Comment

by hayward68 Liverpool is home of the Beatles and there are lots of things to remind you of this. This Yellow Submarine is in a park near Albert Dock, just one of the many Beatles attractions in the city. Leave a Comment
