This intimate restaurant has provided us with many superb meals over the years including dinner on Christmas day last year and the quality has never disappointed.
When the restaurant was first opened there was a larger than life wood-carving of a naked Quasimodo hanging in the widow. This carving complete with intimate appendages quickly became a local landmark but unfortunately went when the original owner sold up.
At that time there was only one floor in what had been a small shop, but the addition of a tasteful iron staircase to the upper floor more than doubled the size but did not reduce the cosiness.

I have no favourite dish as they are all superb and even the lunchtime menu is worth a try. This menu covers three courses, a soup, four starters and four main courses four a miserly £8.95. The price is reduced if only one or two are eaten.
I had potato & leek soup to start followed by a generous dish of panfried chicken livers in a garlic, mustard and chilli sauce. I asked for and was given a large basket of French bread with a pot of buttter.
My young daughter had the main course alone, a substantial chicken breast in black pepper and mushroom sauce with a side dish of vegetables. She could not finish it so I was able to add it to my tasting - excellent.
My wife, ever mindful of her figure, chose a starter alone, smoked salmon and mango salad without the honey and mustard dressing that it was offered with.
With a jug of iced water to wash it down this was an unbeatable delight for lunch at £12.40 for the three of us, as cheap as McDonalds!
The other dishes included rump steak in forrestiere sauce, roasted cod loin, garlic mushrooms and baked brie, goats cheese tartlet and roast vegetable pancake all with sauces and accompaniments. The decor is bright with wooden floors and scrubbed wooden tables with no kitsch and a discrete modern jazz in the background makes conversation a pleasure. Many establishments are unaware that with increasing age, loud music makes conversation impossible.
The owners are able to take advantage of its being adjacent to the university and having a ready supply of bright student staff.
Across the road are 60 Hope Street, and the London Carriage Works, both in the top echelons of restaurants in the country. This means that standards have to be high and indeed they are, but cheaper than the opposition.
The food is plentiful and has top quality ingredients presented neatly and attractively without the chef needing to prove his building skills by putting all the ingredients in the middle of a large plate stacked up as high and narrow as possible.
Our trip today was Saturday lunchtime and I chose from the incredibly good value two-out-of-three menu at £6.90.
I started with Moules (14 large ones) in a rich white wine and cream sauce accompanied by a large slice of sun-dried tomato bread. Having has Moules in the South of France on many occasions I can confidently state that these were the best I have ever had.
The next course was a whole large chicken breast stuffed with sun-dried tomatoes and ricotta (a soft Italian sheeps milk cheese).
It was served with carrots, broccoli and dauphinois potatoes served in a hot pan.
My wife requested extra broccoli which was quicky brought and not charged for. It is little things like that that make us return to a restaurant. My nine year old daughter had the chicken as well but opted for the dessert. She chose white chocolate and orange cheesecake, a large helping and delicious, I know, because there was so much that I had to finish it for her.

On the ground floor, huge contemporary semi-circular sofas instead of dining chairs give a touch of cosiness to this stark, loft-style, rough brick building.
Towards the back of the building, semi private booths seat up to twelve and upstairs there is an a la carte restaurant with a more conventional lay-out (see photo)
There are long bars throughout all the restaurants. The atmosphere is quite relaxed at lunchtime.
The lunchtime menu is served downstairs from 12 - 6 pm, after this time, it becomes a place to meet and drink. Upstairs, food is served at lunchtime and in the evening.
We were only there for lunch but the evening drinks list was amazing - over 80 cocktails to choose from, all priced about 5.95 pounds. Plus a variety of gins, liqeurs, whiskies and wines. The champagne is priced from 25 pounds to 265 pounds(!)
At lunchtime there appeared to be no particular dress code but I should imagine in the evening this is definitely a place to dress up - so get those stilettos sharpened and get ready to mingle with celebrities.
I am determined to come to the a la carte upstairs restaurant one evening as it does look very special.
The lunchtime menu for the downstairs restaurant is simple and quick. Soup from 3.45 pounds and platters of sandwiches, salsa, Dim Sum and seafood from 7.95 pounds. The platters are suitable for two sharing.
There are a few dishes under the heading 'Italian menu', likewise 'Tennessee Grill'. There are several Caesar salads (plain, chicken/bacon, tuna, salmon) from 4.95 - 7.95 pounds and a variety of club sandwiches which come with fries and salad from 7.95 pounds.
The husband had a wonderful bowl of 'Dixie Pork Bangers' - spicy sausages with salsa and potato wedges. He thoroughly enjoyed it.
I had a chicken/bacon caesar salad. The bill with a pint of beer and a glass of wine came to about 21 pounds. Upstairs in the evenings, this part of the restaurant is very upmarket and expensive but the food is wonderful. We usually order one of the specials rather than the menu but make sure you leave room for the puddings which are yummy. Side dishes are extra, the only niggle I have, as I think they should be included with the price of the main course. You will need to book for the evening and hope someone else will pick up the bill! Estimate at least £70 per head including wine.
I usually try something different each time and I've never been disappointed in either the bistro or restaurant.
Last Saturday in the basement bistro I had a simple bowl of houmus with hot bread for about 4 pounds. The daughter had chicken wraps (about 7.50 pounds) and the husband had a steak sandwich about 10 pounds.

If the term ‘Indian Restaurant’ conjures up images of benevolent looking elephant gods and flock wallpaper you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the Mayur Restaurant. Established by a local Indian doctor, frustrated by the lack of fine Indian dining in Liverpool this is a stylish affair that combines contemporary surroundings with top class cuisine. Gone also is the encyclopaedic menu focussing instead on a range of signature dishes and a modest range of poultry, fish, meat and vegetarian dishes, Oh yes, and if your a Liverpool fan I saw Momo Sissoko dining here and reckon others will follow.
My Lamb Rogan Josh was succulent with an excellent sauce complimented with fluffy rice, light Nan bread and Indian beer. The staff were friendly and attentive even though I hadn’t booked in advance. The restaurant had a lively buzz with a good mix of clients. The only slight disappointment was the lack of availability of some items on the sweet menu. Given however it has only been open a few weeks I’m sure such problems will be ironed out by the time you visit. Pod is a Tapa's Bar and Wine Bar located along the Allerton Road/Penny Lane area of Liverpool.
Generally, the people who go eat and drink in her are twenty somethings and above - no tracksuited clad scallies in this joint!!
The tables in here are large so it is not very intimate if you are just having a drink with your loved one, (this does not apply to the restaurant area) however, if you are with your mates, it's great, you can get loads of you round the table and share a bottle or three of wine!
They will even do table service for your drinks if you ask nicely and tip appropriately!
At the back is the restauraunt area (and best bit). There are large tables for groups and intimate tables for all you lovers out there! The choice of tapas is not extensive, however there is enough choice to satisfy most tastes. (If you like fish go for the smoked haddock fish cakes with sweet chilli sauce - I dream about these babies, I crave them on a weekly basis - THEY ARE NOT TO BE MISSED!) After you have washed yo three/four/five tapas down with a bottle of wine, check out the dessert board. I often manage to squeeze in some Chocolate Cake or Pecan Pie - fantastic!
The whole place is relaxed, you will get no hassle in here!
The majority of the Staff are excellent, and will help you with anything you are not sure of on the Menu or wine list.

Blue Bar and Grill is a fantastic place for eating and drinking. It offer views of the River Mersey and the surrounding Albert Dock. It is quite family orientated in the daytime and full of cool people of all ages in the evening. Get a bottle of wine, glasses for your mates and go sit outside and gossip! It cannot be beaten. I love it!
In Summer you can sit outside and eat which is just fabulous. The staff are all really helpful and friendly and advise you on anything you are unsure of.
The menu is not exhaustive, but there really is something for everyone. You can go for Tapa's to share, get something from the grill or just simple (posh!) burgers.
If you dine inside, upstairs in the evening it is a little bit more formal, yet retains a relaxed atmosphere.
You sometimes see some celebs and football players in here, knocking back expensive Champagne. But it remains unpretentious!
The Tapa's are fantastic - no too pricey and not to filling. Excellent if you are planning a full blown night out after your meal.
