    Radio City Tower

It's always in your sight, and a good orientation point as it nearly fixes the city center. There are tours to the top on weekends. You can book them at the tourist information at Queens Square. We didn't do it, but I think it's always a good thing to get a view over a city to "read" it.

    Radio City Tower

Radio City - a local radio station from Liverpool - bought this tower which used to be a revolving restaurant until the 80s. The tower is not open for the public anymore but you can book tours via the tourist information. There are Radio CIty's studios and offices in the tower now.

Sandy organised a tour for us to start our tour of the city. We met them and got a private tour of the tower. Unfortunately the windows were rather dirty and it was quite a hazy day so the views weren't as spectacular as expected. It's a nice way to get an overview of the city though!

The tower is much nicer now than it was back in 1982 when I last saw it (see "must see"). Then it was a horrible plain grey/brown concrete structure - it was actually quite a monstrosity. Now it's been cleaned up (and reclad by the look of it) and it's a bright, shining beacon on the Liverpool skyline.
We were booked for a tour of the tower and the Radio City studios (booking is essential - check with Liverpool Tourist Information beforehand).

    Looking Down From The Tower

On the Radio City tour you get the chance to see spectacular views of Liverpool from the top of the tower. Unluckily for us it was a hazy sort of day, so the distant views were not very good. This is looking down into Williamson Square from the top of the tower.

Radio City Tour - No Kylie?

    Gold CD's

On our tour around the studios we noticed the walls are littered with Gold, Platinum and Silver CDs of various artists that Radio City "helped in their success" (=played their music). I looked in vain for one of Kylie - seems her success was not down to Radio City ;-)

Radio City Tower rises above the St John's Market shopping centre, which is the site of the original Liverpool market, Charter for which was granted in 1207 by King John.

    - The beacon was originally opened as the rotating Tower Resturant. The restaurant traded for 18 months or so before closing. The tower remained pretty much closed for about 20 years, opening only occasionally. In the late 1990's a second floor was added to the observation platform and the local commercial radio station, Radio City, took over the premises.

    - As part of Liverpool's City of Light project, the tower is routinely lit in gairish colours from around 8 p.m. to midnight with an extension to 2 a.m at weekends.

    - Originally conceived as a way to remove fumes from the shopping centre's heating system, the tower was seen as a more attractive alternative to a conventional chimney.

Radio City 96.7 was launched in 1974, and is the award winning station which broadcasts over Liverpool, North West England and North Wales. There is a potential audience of some 1.8 million listeners.

Magic 1548 is a sister station and broadcasts feel good favourites of the 60s 70s and beyond. It is as sucessful as it's older "sister" station.

Joining these two stations during 2008, will be City Talk; this station will be speech based and broadcast a mix of entertainment, conversation, news and sporting events.

The stations broadcast from St Johns Beacon.

The focal point of Liverpool's skyline is the Radio City Tower. Once a well known restaurant, the tower was converted into the local Radio Station Headquarters when fire regulations forced the restaurant to close. Guided tours are available Saturday and Sunday - amazing views from the top!!!

This is where we were headed, to meet up with Sandy & Dave. You can't really miss the Radio City Tower - it dominates the Liverpool skyline.
