    The Grapes Pub

The Grapes -local of the Beatles

The Grapes is the only traditional pub on Matthew Street - in fact the only pub here in the 1960's. Its sitauated opposite the Cavern Club so the Beatles would often pop in here for a drink before playing at the club. The pub still retains the seat and the wallpaper behind it where the Beatles once sat - so now everyone wants to come in here and have their photo taken in that same place.

    John Lennon

There's no escaping the Beatle connection in Liverpool. Right from the moment you arrive at Liverpool's new airport its in your face. The old airport is now just down the road and the modern new one has a new name - the John Lennon Airport. Plus a very fine sculpture of its legendary namesake can be seen here too - unveiled by Yoko Ono.

  • TOWER WITHOUT A VIEW

by sabsi Updated May 5, 2003

Royal Liver Building as (not) seen from the tower

Watch out for hazy days when doing a tour of the Radio City Tower. When you are unlucky (like we were) you won't see much from up there!

Unique Suggestions: Search for a Kylie CD, watch the presentation on the history of the tower, admire the furniture design and have a great time with friends :)

Fun Alternatives: Düsseldorf's Rhine Tower is higher, more scary and the views are clearer normally. But it isn't in Liverpool ;)

So Sandy, Dave, Steve and Susan, next time it's my turn to organise a great view ;-)

Alcohol City - Sleazy anytown anybar attitude!!

by trisbj Written Jul 16, 2006

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Beware of the franchise bars - the likes of Walkabout, and most of the bars around the Concert Square (Arena, rat and parrot, Edwards etc). These are not representative of Liverpools fine drinking culture and I would advise visitors to avoid them like the plague - unless you like the same old cheap beer induced aggression and underage sexual display as any other british City centre. make your way instead round the corner to The Korova bar, or The PostOffice on School Lane, further afield to The Philharmonic Pub or The classic bohemian Everyman Bistro. There are plenty of lovely, relaxed, jovial establishments - ask somenone in one of these places and you won't be steered wrong!

Unique Suggestions: On the other hand if you stand on a street corner around Slater St or Concert Sq at 11-3pm the street display is fascinating - and its free (as long as the bouncers don't get suspicious).

Fun Alternatives: Make your way instead round the corner to the cool Korova bar, or the warm The PostOffice on School Lane, further afield to The Philharmonic Pub or The classic bohemian Everyman Bistro. There are plenty of lovely, relaxed, jovial establishments - ask somenone in one of these places and you won't be steered wrong!

    Yellow Submarine

    yellow submarine

See there's no escaping the fact that the Beatles came from this part of the world! This yellow submarine was once in the Liverpool Garden festival site - now long since neglected and ripe again for redevelopment. TYhen it was virtually opposite the Albert Docks but today - due to ongoing road works in that area - it is sitting outside John Lennon airport, and will do so for the next 5 years apparently!

    Mathew St & Beatlemania

    Mathew St, Liverpool

Mathew St is being plugged as the Birthplace of the Beatles. Along this street are various Beatle-bars and shops, it's really nothing special. The Cavern pub itself where the Beatles were discovered is actually really really small. You have to down about 3 or 4 flights of stairs and it's very dark and incredibly small.

    Beatlemania

Liverpool is proud to be associated with the Beatles. They are arguably the most known band in the world even though they were only together about 10 years. Sir Paul McCartney is still touring and the other member still alive, Ringo is touring this year as well but he's never been in the spotlight like Paul and John were.

Tourist trap? Well .... the focus of a lot of the tourism stuff is the Beatles. They really push it. And if you aren't that much of a fan you will probably get weary of it. I was interested enough to see Matthew street since we were going right by there anyway. There's a tacky yellow submarine near Albert Dock and souvenir shops all over.

Unique Suggestions: Liverpool is a city of marvellous architecture and culture. The people have a sharp sense of humour and are strong and hardy. Enjoy the city on it's own.

    'Ferry 'cross the Mersey'......

by StirCrazy Written Aug 25, 2002

'Ferry 'cross the Mersey'... don't waste your money. It's a boring old ferry, the Mersey is a big, grey, cold river and the circular river trip with piped Gerry & the Pacemakers Muzak is just too tacky for words.

Oh, and steer clear of all those hideous Beatles souvenirs while you're in the area too. Liverpool has SO MUCH more going for it than an bunch of old geezers who once played a bit of music!!

    The Beatles Story museum

by sandysmith Updated Aug 24, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Beatles Story museum (situated in the Albert Dock complex) is a bit over-rated in my experience - but if you're a die-hard Beatles fan then by all means don't miss it. There are many posters, a lot of reading material on the walls, their costumes and musical instruments are displayed and of course their music is piped through as you walk around. There is a good shop (don't have to pay to go in this) where there is a plentiful supply of memorablia for purchase. A novelty factor is being able to get a penny pressed with the beatles imprinted on it.

    Magical Mystery Tour. Avoid...

by buzzz Written Aug 24, 2002

    1 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Magical Mystery Tour. Avoid this unless you are an absolute die hard beatles freak. It is like a tour of Liverpool slums. My friend Gill who was visiting from USA was keen to go on it so myself and a couple of other friends, one of whom incidently IS Paul McCartneys cousin, went with her. Gill thoroughly enjoyed it but for the rest of us the best entertainment came from the tour guide who was stuck in a sixties time warp and seemed to know all the Beatles and their families personally. Funny he didn't know who we had sitting with us!

  • The only real tourist trap I...

The only real tourist trap I can think of is the so called 'Magical Mystery tour bus' Personally I think it is a rip off....but that is just my opinion!!! Liverpool is so self-contained it is very easy, and cheap to get around without the need of a tour guide....charging you for it!!
Anyway, you will soon find it easy to make friends with a Scouser, who would take great pleasure showing you around (especially off the beaten track!) and they won't even charge you!!!!!

China Town.. not so big after all?

by nylo Written Dec 3, 2008
    China Town from Berry Street

China Town in Liverpool is meant to be the biggest in Europe, and the arch itself is meant to be the biggest outside of Asia. But if you go there, which I did, with an open mind, it was still very disapointing.
The arch is lovely, but if you go through the arch, its just deserted, nothing is open, hardly anybody about... I was disapointed.

Unique Suggestions: Make sure you have alternatives for places to go, to avoid disapointment of a wasted day out.

    Croxteth Hall

Theres nothing there. Atleast there wasnt when we went. It was sign posted (we hadnt intending going there) and found there to be a hall, which didnt apprear open, an icecream van, a gift shop (where bought a coffee as it was freezing cold) and a walled garden which had a big lock on the gate so we couldnt go in.

Unique Suggestions: Find an alternative incase you are disapointed
