The sea goes out so far here

Favorite thing: We got to Southport at the end of the afternoon so did not spend a lot of time there but we were lucky enough to witness the most amazing sunset. When the tide goes out the sea seems so far away and you can walk out quite a long way.

Marine Lake

Favorite thing: What I have always liked about Southport is the openess of it. Its not like other seaside resorts where it is built up all along the promenade. In Southport there is the beach, then pleasureland, the lake and green open spaces, flowers, trees and benches to sit and have a rest.

Scarisbrick Avenue Southport

Favorite thing: Scarisbrick Avenue is one of several avenues linking Lord Street (the shopping area) with the seafront promenades and pier entrance. Lots of eateries - mainly fish and chip cafes - and pubs can be found here as well as candy floss and rock shops and all the usual seaside stalls.

Marine Way Bridge

Favorite thing: Much needed redevelopment has taken place in recent years in Southport Most notably the Marine Way Bridge which was opened to pedestrians at a formal naming ceremony on the 14th May 2004 and opened to traffic from the 17th May 2004. This modern designed bridge spans the Marine Lake between the Ocean Plaza leisure and retail park and the Promenade. It also has a link onto the pier too.

Kangaroo jumps on the beach!

Favorite thing: There are car parks along Marine Drive but at the southern end of the beach you can park on the sands. In fact this is where our son had his very first drive in my husbands car, thought he was in Australia though by doing a few kangaroo jumps! There is a charge for parking on the beach about £2.00.
I sat on the sands watching and took this picture.

CAN U C THE C?

Favorite thing: The sands at Southport seem to stretch on for miles even before you reach the water...only on a few occasions of visiting have I seen the tide in.

Fondest memory: Be careful when parking on the beach it can get a little difficult to get off.

Southport during the winter

The Lake

Favorite thing: I enjoy going to Southport for a day out during the winter months when it is cold, crisp and sunny.

Take a walk around the Lake up to the Pier and also along the beach. It usually is quite windy but on a sunny day is so refreshing!

Fondest memory: My fondest memory is a ride on the Miniature Railway and also playing in the "Peter Pan" playground which many people do not seem to remember.

Southport Promenade

Favorite thing: Here is an old postcard showing the Promenade at Southport, probably in the 1920's. My father's grandmother originated from there and the family used to visit regularly. The postcards originally belonged to my father's sister.

The tide at Southport used to come in much further inland than it does now and the present promenade is built on reclaimed land.

Fondest memory: Southport must have been extremely popular in Victorian and Edwardian times.

When I was a small child we used to visit Southport 2 or 3 times during the summer months, just for a day out but never actually stayed there for any length of time.

Wayfarers arcade this way

Favorite thing: Southport really is a great place to shop, shop and then shop. As well as the usual high street stores along Lord Street there are several more boutique style shops for that individual something amongst the several arcaded shoping areas:

Wayfarers Arcade (just off Lord Street) is a grade II listed arcade, a fine victorian stained glass arcade.
Royal Arcade (also off Lord Street) good for furniture , jewellery and collectables.
Cambridge Walks - quality stores and designer boutiques here.
Marble Place - shopping is a pleasure in this airy glass-roofed arcade.
