  • Promenade Strolls

If its too wet on the marine lake wall - ie. the tide is in and you don't want to get your feet then then simply stroll along the pomenade - there's usually someone feefing the greedy sea-gulls. here they are waiting to pounch on any scraps!

  • Have a look over to Wales!

Just get out of the door and after 50 meters you will be at the coast, well at least it's only the Dee river, but you already feel like at the coast....

  • The Marine Lake

Sandy is sooo lucky to live so close to the water. Even when the sea is gone (as everytime I was there to have a look ;) there's water a minute away from her home. Next to the sea (which isn't really the sea but the river Dee!) there's an artificial Marine Lake for sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. A beautiful place for a walk!

On a warm summer's day its an idyllic place to take a picnic and laze in the warmth. To reach Hilbre Island start at the slipway near the north end of West Kirby Marine Lake. The distance is about 4 miles (note no refreshments are available on the island). Plan your...

  • Decent pub food

Part of the Wetherspoons chain, there is nothing outstanding about the pub but it is big, airy and offers a good selection of food and drink. The Dee is located right opposite West Kirby train station and several buses stop outside.A good place to meet with friends. The food on offer is the same in all Weatherspoons around the countryI had the 8oz...

I live on the Wirral and visit Marigold's restaurant once a month as a treat as we have found that they have the best fish and chips we've managed to experience around about this area. Whilst I sympathise with the other reviewer who had a bad experience regarding his/her wanting to use the toilets whilst waiting for a take out order I would hate...

  • appalling service

I have frequently visited Marigold's, both as an eat-in and takeaway customer. Today (21/06/2007) I went to buy fish & chips for myself and my 82 year old disabled father, who I left outside. As I was placing my order, I explained that we would quickly like to use the toilet facilities, while our food was being prepared. I was astonished to be told...

  • Closest to Home

Although literally round the corner from home have yet to try this one out. Usual dishes - nothing out of the ordinary.Good early doors menu - always looks busy so can't be bad.Having tried it out it was OK but not my favourite. I did enjoy the deep fried squid starter though - really tasty.

  • Taste the World

Sandy and Dave brought us to this very nice restaurant in the evening. They serve a mixture of tastes of the world here - I had a Thai starter followed by something which almost tasted German or Swiss. The interieur design of the place looks very mediterrane and the staff is very friendly. Thanks for the beautiful dinner, Sandy and Dave!!! My...

  • "Taste the World"

This restauarant has several menus - early doors, menus from around the world - french, italian, mexican, thai - and veggie ones. Not huge portions but by the time you've had three courses its plenty. Salmon in a lemon butter sauce is usually my favourite.

  • Another Italian Option

Just a couple of minutes walk futher down from the Green room is PK's a more upmarket Italian than Cas Mia's but not as expensive as Scognamiglios. Pasta and mediterranean dishes to choose from. Early door menu £10 for starter and a main. Veggie menu looks a bit limited thoughFor example the main veggie starter is like a savoury rice with peppers...

West Kirby Nightlife

  • Sunsets

Sunsets over Hilbre Island are often spectacular here - the sky becomes tinged with pink and the clouds reflected in teh water. You have to be quick though as the sun sets so quickly - I usuallly just have time to dash from my home!

  • Red Sky at Night

Watching the sunset over Hilbre is popular - some amazing sunsets can be seen here throughout the year. Seeing the sun as a red flaming ball dipping into the water behind Hilbre is simply stunning.

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

West Kirby is easily reached from Liverpool by train - takes about 30 mins on the Merseyrail network - recently taken over by a dutch company. West Kirby is a terminal station on the Wirral line , so take the train to the end and get off. Get a return ticket as a single will now cost you the same price :-S

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A local summer custom is to have an annual charity raft race on the marina - usually the August bank holiday weekend.
Rafts of various designs...submarine, desert islands...are constucted and raced on the marina. Its quite a coulourful sight and quite comical to watch the various teams try to sabotage their opponents with eggs and flour bags etc....!!

West Kirby Warnings and Dangers

  • High Tides

Combination of high tides and strong winds often results in waves crashing over onto the promenade - open for walkers at their own risk but road will be closed for traffic.Nowhere near the scale of the recent devastating Tsunami Disaster in Asia of course but people people must be mad to walk out in this kind of weather!

  • Caldy Corner

On the main road out of West Kirby by Caldy, towards Heswall , is a conservation area and in springtime the field there is ablaze with the colour blue from bluebells. As I drive past it on the way to work in the morning light catches it beautifully and pics cannot really do it justice!

  • Ashton Park

A short stroll the other direction from the marina is Ashton Park in West Kirby. It has a lake which is popular with model boat enthusiasts at times...but they don't scare the ducks too much. There is also a bowling green, tennis courts and a children's play area.Always a good time for the ducks is springtime when nesting and mating is very much to...

The Wirral doesn't often have snow - being protected on one side by North Wales and the Penninies on the other side...so to see the beach with a smattering of snow is quite unusual.
