The cavern, Liverpool: Birthplace of the Beatles...

by sourbugger

Facing each other on Matthew street, Liverpool is the Cavern Club and the Cavern Pub.They probaby interconnect somewhere, and they are owned by the same company - but many visitors (and sometime locals) seem to have become confused about where the Beatles actually played. It is the Cavern Club that you want -and down several flights of stairs in a grungy cellar bar you can still see the crummy little stage where music was changed forever.I'm glad to say that the management don't appear to mind hoardes of tourists coming into the bar for free, taking a picture and then fleeing again. It would however seem curlish not to at least by a drink. The 'pub' has tons of stuff in it from the sixties and early seventies. After all, it was not only the Beatles that played the Cavern but other such greats as :Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Status Quo, Judas Priest, Joe Cocker, The Who,...

Everywhere: 5th November

by deeper_blue

Remember remember the 5th of November: Gunpowder treason and plot.In 1605 a group of conspirators headed by Robert Catesby and made notorious by Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the houses of parliament. Foiled at the eleventh hour they are immortalised by fireworks every Nov 5th and a guy placed upon a bonfire. This is a truly English tradition well worth seeing.

Jewel: The Jewel of Piccadilly Circus

by shelincognito

Jewel is a newer nightclub in Piccadilly, near the underground station. The place is decked out with some of the most beautiful people in London. No cover charge for ladies, but will cost you 5 BSP for gents. There are three gorgeous bars, each unique in decor and ambiance. Be sure to check out the Ruby Room upstairs, done up Buddha Bar style with a rosy red-orange, candle lit glow and many dark corners... Owned by Soho Clubs and Bars, this is a place to wear your shortest skirt and highest heels!

NIA BIRMINGHAM / NEC BIRMINGHAM: Laughs A glore

Both places are near to each other in the city of Birmingham. They have a variety of different shows for all different tastes from young to old. E.g children shows featuring well known children characters, comedians my favourite is Jasper Carrot and lots of different concerts.

DE NIRO'S of Newmarket: The biggest & best nightclub in England (IMHO)

by TheTravelSlut

I believe that this nightclub/danceclub is the finest I have ever experienced. I highly recommend it.The club is open Thursday through Saturday from 9 PM to 3 AM and Sunday from 7 PM to 1 AM. There is a cover charge. The staff is wonderful and there is adequate security for peace of mind. There are also VIP areas and reasonable requests can be considered. This is an age 18 & over nightclub that has 4 stories, 6 dance floors, over 1,500 person capacity, special drink prices, bars on all 4 floors, and music that is both trendy & right for the venue. There are pole dance & cage podiums, a huge sound system that runs throughout the venue, dazzling light and laser shows, just about every imaginable drink. The DJ's keep everything pumped up & there is even a photo gallery that highlights the evening activities.I can't imagine any club that could provide more. I only wish I would have taken...

Thames: Romantic

by hepchick

Go for a walk in the middle of the night in the city. And end up walking along the river Thames. It's an experience not many people can share. Walking shoes. And warm clothes, unles it's summer and there is a heatwave. Yes, even in London that happens. It doesn't always rain.

The George Inn: Have a pint in Shakespere's old boozer...probably

by sourbugger

The George Inn in Southwark, London is now very firmly on the tourist trail, especially with the development of the South Bank area and inparticular the Globe Theatre. The Gabled coaching inn, which has been restored by the National Trust has been a boozer since the early 16th Century and still serves up some excellent ales now. I would unwaveringly recomend the 'George Ale' which is specially brewed for the Pub by Adnams in Suffolk, one of our finest English Brewers.Shakespere is known to have had lodgings nearby, and before the development of theatres it was in courtyards like this that travelling theatre companies performed. The courtyard is still there, although nowadays it is filled with benches and gas heaters to keep the chill off the tourists enjoying a pint or three. The place also does traditional food as well.We can but speculate upon how some plots would have altered if he...

The Eagle Pub, Cambridge: The Drunken Gene

by sourbugger

Be true to your DNA The Eagle has had a very long history, but only opened in it's present form about a dozen years ago.The five-roomed pub is deeply traditional with deep red-walls, stone flagging and boards on the floor. The pub also has a couple of special feature : Firstly a gabled heated courtyard for outdoor drinking and secondly a RAF bar at the back with signatures of wartime pilots on the ceiling.A plaque outside also records that this is where Crick and Watson came to drink after work during the period they were working on the structure of DNA. I have a sneaking suspicion that the bar snacks available here may have influenced their deliberations. Did the humble pork scratching provide inspiration ?

Embassy theatre, Skegness: You too can live in the 1970's

by sourbugger

You thought you had left 1978 You though that 1978 was a long time ago - but No!, any act that last had a decent non-ironic television appearance since 1978 is here for your delectation on stage. You just couldn't make this stuff up : the summer season at the Embassy Theatre in 2003, for example included the following performers still pathetically scatching a living out of people who think Lisa Riley is cool :Showaddywaddy (under the moon of rain)Jimmy Cricket and Bernie Clifton (the Funny Guys - their words not mine)Chas'n'Dave (just loopy now)Keith Harris and Orville.I despair Nothing that shows any semblance of taste

Bigg Market: Nightlife in Newcastle

by sourbugger

A heaven of short skirts God, don't they build Northern women well ?Bigg Market in the centre of Newcastle is at the heart, or perhaps exposed belly button of the 'Party City' that Newcastle has become. The Sterotype that Geordie girls will go out on a freezing November night with a biting Siberian wind howling and two inches of snow on the ground dressed only in high heels, a microskirt and a strappy top is thankfully all too true.Men of course will never wear a jacket - you might just be seen as a soft, puffy, lager-drinking southerner. They certainly come in all shapes and sizes and it is certainly the case that some women really should perhaps consider their age, fatness of thigh, and extent of their cellulite before venturing out in little more than a belt.Still, I'm not complaining - Friday and Saturday nights around Bigg Market will be one experience in life you will never forget -...
